Topple Foe reaction

If I'm wielding a two-handed melee weapon, can you ignore Trip's requirement that you have a hand free when trying to use this ability? Also can I wield a weapon that doesn't have the trip trait while attempting this ability?

I'd say that no, you can't ignore the requirement because the ability doesn't say so and you make a normal Trip. You can't attempt this ability if you wield two-handed weapon without trip (or other rules which could allow you to Trip in this case).

If you are just holding a two-handed weapon without trip in one hand and have one hand free, you can attempt this ability (obviously).

Errenor is correct. Topple Foe says absolutely nothing about changing any of the requirements of the subordinate Trip action. So if you wouldn't be able to Trip normally, you aren't able to Trip with Topple Foe.

Only if you have a two-handed weapon with the trip trait.

Only if you also have a free hand.

Long story short: you need the ability to take the trip action to use the Topple Foe reaction.
This can include a free hand, a weapon with the Trip trait, or some other feat/ability/item that allows you to trip normally for some reason. (I dunno, maybe there's a feat that lets you trip using a tail or something?)

What if I'm wielding a two handed weapon without the trip trait, could I release my grip on my weapon to attempt to topple foe with my free hand? Then obviously next round on my turn spend an action to regrip my weapon?

No.

Release is a Free Action, so you can do it during your turn without spending an action. It isn't a Triggered Free Action to do outside of your turn unless you Readied it.

Gotcha thanks Hammer. Question, is there any way to put the trip trait on a weapon that doesn't have it?

Inventor Weapon Innovation: Entangling Form.

I'm also seeing Hooked Rune but that is Rare and from an AP.

Oh wow, I didn't know this existed. The depth of your knowledge runs deep. So I could MCD into Inventor and it would come with it wouldn't it?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thanks.

You could get the weapon innovation with the dedication, but it wouldn't come with any abilities. You would need the level 8 Inventor Archetype feat Basic Modification also.
