Automatic Bonus Progression with Kineticists

Has there been any discussion on how ABP interacts with Kineticists? Their Gate Attenuators are only supposed to go up to +2 and have different item levels than potency runes.

gate attenuator - lvl 3 - +1 attack potency
greater gate attenuator - lvl 11 - +2 attack potency
major gate attentuaro - lvl 17 - +2 attack potency (with con boost)

ABP/Potency Runes - lvl 2, lvl 10, lvl 16

Since Elemental Blast (and some other impulses) has the attack tag, wouldn't ABP increase it?

Is the best option to just give a kineticist a free or discounted gate attenuator at the correct item level?

Horizon Hunters

That optional rule is not designed with Kineticists in mind. You will have to wait for the remaster to come out to see if they modify it to accommodate them.

Liberty's Edge

What CK said, they almost CERTAINLY designed the Kinetecist with the new/remastered version of ABP in mind instead but we will have to wait until the GMC1 drops to actually see how they changed it because, well, I think even the most diehard fans of ABP would admit that it has some rough edges that could be cleaned up.

The entire optional rule section of the PF2 GMG could have used a public playtest but now that it's been in peoples hands for so long I think they had more than enough public feedback to get a feel for where it needs tweaks.

That actually brings up a question I hadn't considered. Will they reprint any or all of the variant rules?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

The easy solution in the interim is to just give the kineticist a potency boost at the level their attenuators would normally come online.

We have very little idea what GMC may or may not say on the topic though. There's even a chance any updated version of ABP (if it exists) might not cover kineticists at all, in the same way that the GMG's ABP rules give zero guidance on how to handle alchemists despite being a core class.

I'm pretty sure ABP is one of the variant rules Paizo explicitly said they were including in GM core. There will be others as well.

I did ask about that in the GM Core thread and never got an answer. If they do include it, I'll be very happy. I hope they just keep the bonuses from weapon and armor potency runes, striking runes and resilient runes on it and remove all the item bonus stuff as well as the apex item boost.

I looked today at what just leaving the WBL as it is under above-mentioned system would do to party wealth and it seems that the party would just be one level above their expected wealth, if the WBL table would be left the same as it is now. That doesn't seem to be affecting all that much in terms of game balance.

I vaguely remember it being mentioned verbally - which means it would have been in one of the first Twitch livestreams or YouTube videos.

What I can remember is that they are planning on including some of the more popular and well balanced variant rules such as ABP and Free Archetype in the Core books. A couple of the less useful and unnecessary ones such as the Alignment variants are going to not be kept.

Very cool. Can't wait until November! :)

Also, to be clear - they have also confirmed that these variants are still going to be optional variants. Not the baseline rules. Your table still has to decide that you are going to opt-in to use them.

Since I'll be the GM for the next campaign again, it's pretty sure that we'll be running a "half ABP" version, like the one I've described above. Taking away the hassle for me to give them fundamental runes at the appropiate levels (or make them buy them), while giving them the freedom of getting item bonus items as they can afford.

Alright, the Automatic Bonus Progression is definitely in the GM Core. It was clearly on the sidebar of the variant rules page they previewed (which were level 0 characters and free archetype) at GenCon.
