Creating a Ring of detect Illusion

Rules Discussion

I need a to create a ring that make the bearer "automatically" detec illusions. I know that there are several ways to make the ring less powerfull and so less pricey but I still have to come to grasps with the basic rules for something like that I really would appreciate some help.

Options:
- Always on and no limitations
- Limited range
- only works for a certain time each day after activation
- Only works with a secret check

That sort of absolute effect is not really in the game much at all. Detect Magic does it already but only for effects of lower level.
If I was creating it. it would be strictly out of player control, because I don't want a whole school of magic to be nerfed like that.

There is a reason True Seeing works like it does.

What you are wanting is an Artifact. Those can break the rules. Use with caution.

You can make a ring that can actively search for illusions with some activation action that works similar to a illusion school specific https://2e.aonprd.com/Spells.aspx?ID=66 or that can give bonus to Perception vs Illusions.

Always on for free action is too much but you can use "constantly" as exploration activity.

The item level is based in the max spell level that the ring can detect (for example, to detect until a level 9 spell it can be a lvl 17 item). The price is based in the level. But due it's too specific and limited function you can make it more cheaper.

I think the thing that comes closest is having an item that can cast True Seeing a number of time per day at whatever level is felt to be appropriate.

If you want the item to overcome all illusions you would need a 7th level spell version of true seeing (and luck to get a critical success on the counteract check) or a 9th level spell version of true seeing with a regular success.

And then you need to do it how many ever time per day.

For something that has a reasonable chance of counteracting every illusion and works all day it's like being able to cast a 9th level spell an unlimited amount of times per day. That is artifact territory, as mentioned.

If you want an item to cast a 9th level spell version of true seeing and be usable once per day, there is probably a reasonable cost that can be calculated, but it wont be cheap.

For example, the existing item Scope of Truth basically functions as True Seeing as a 7th level spell with a +20 bonus for counteracting checks. Meaning on a regular success (of the counteract check) you will see through 8th level spells. On a failure you can still see through 6th level spell effects and lower. Unless you critically fail the check.

This is a 13th level item and costs 3000 gp. At 13th level, you should have about 25,000 gp so this one item represents about 12% of your wealth.

Getting a stronger spell level and more uses per day will increase the cost.

And that's only 1/day for 10 min.
