One of my players asked this, can they use the Blunderbuss' scatter attack (or any scatter weapon) to perform Ranged Trip or Ranged Disarm against any of their targets as long as they have the appropriate feats?
I know there's a magic item called the Shockwave Blunderbuss that automatically makes a trip attack against the enemies it hits but items have been able to break the rules before.

Scatter weapons cannot be modified by precision damage or damage increasing feats. Ranged trip and ranged disarm both have deadly aim as a prerequisite. The description of ranged disarm states “A well placed shot disarms your foe”. To me that kind of indicate that the ranged combat maneuvers are precision attacks. RAW there does not seem to be a reason that they cannot be used with a scatter weapon, however I would say that RAI they should not be. Personally, I would not allow it.

Yeah, raw it works, but it's too silly. As ranged trip it seems reasonable, blunderbuss to the legs knocking people down isn't realistic but it follows a sort of movie logic. Ranged disarm in a cone in front of you is getting a tad silly, but everyone dropping their weapons when shot isn't complete nonsense. Ace Disarm allowing you to steal from everyone in a cone in front of you is beyond description.

More seriously:
Disarm
Source PRPG Core Rulebook pg. 199
You can attempt to disarm your opponent in place of a melee attack. If you do not have the Improved Disarm feat, or a similar ability, attempting to disarm a foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver. Attempting to disarm a foe while unarmed imposes a –4 penalty on the attack. If your attack is successful, your target drops one item it is carrying of your choice (even if the item is wielded with two hands). If your attack exceeds the CMD of the target by 10 or more, the target drops the items it is carrying in both hands (maximum two items if the target has more than two hands). If your attack fails by 10 or more, you drop the weapon that you were using to attempt the disarm. If you successfully disarm your opponent without using a weapon, you may automatically pick up the item dropped.
Disarm works on a target.
Scatter is an area attack that is resolved separately against every creature in the area, not a targeted attack. So you can't use Ranged Disarm when using the area attack, as it doesn't target anyone.

I assumed that since you were making an attack against each creature in the area they were considered targets.
An attack roll represents your attempt to strike your opponent on your turn in a round. When you make an attack roll, you roll a d20 and add your attack bonus. (Other modifiers may also apply to this roll.) If your result equals or beats the target’s Armor Class, you hit and deal damage.
but I don't honestly know if "target" is a consistently used mechanical term or a plain English one.
Either way, it seems reasonable to restrict all the (targeting) flagged feats to single target attacks.

Targeted is defined under the magic rules. Then the term is used for a lot of other rules. It is the same "target/targeted"? For several rules it clearly is, for others, it is a matter of interpretation.

Well my player got back to me after doing his own research and outside the Shockwave Blunderbuss he has come to the conclusion that scatter weapons can't range trip or disarm but thank you for your input. I was willing to let it go as long as the penalties stacked but at least as far as my group is concerned this is resolved. thank you
