Imperious Eldritch Heritage

Rules Questions

I am investigating the feasibility of running a Bard with the Imperious Bloodline via the Eldritch Heritage feat line and after a different question here on the Paizo forums; I am looking for some clarity regarding the 'Heroic Legends' bloodline power.

Heroic Legends (Su): At 15th level, you may inspire greatness or inspire heroics as a bard of your sorcerer level by sacrificing a spell slot as a swift or move action. The effect lasts a number of rounds equal to the sacrificed spell's level; this duration is doubled for human recipients.

Can a Bard or any spellcasting class for that matter, sacrifice any one of their spells to activate this ability?

Or does it have to be a Sorcerer spell and therefore this ability is redundant with Greater Eldritch Heritage?

I have found that Bard VMC Sorcerer works pretty well... you would have wait until level 19 for your Heroic Legends Bloodline Power, which is two levels later than you could get it from Greater Eldritch Heritage, though.

Anyways, to answer your question, the ability does not specify that you must sacrifice a Sorcerer spell slot. Bards have spell slots available. There are abilities that actually say which class spell slot activates the ability, so the lack of such texts leads me to believe it works with any spell slot available regardless of class.

Everyone allows Sorcerer Bloodline Arcana to work with multiclassed spell slots, so why wouldn't Sorcerer Bloodline Powers?

Sorcerer: Do the bonuses granted from Bloodline Arcana apply to all of the spells cast by the sorcerer, or just those cast from the sorcerer's spell list?

The Bloodline Arcana powers apply to all of the spells cast by characters of that bloodline, not just those cast using the sorcerer's spell slots.

General rule: If a class ability modifies your spellcasting, it applies to your spells from all classes, not just spells from the class that grants the ability. (The exception is if the class ability specifically says it only applies to spells from that class.)

Spending a spell slot doesn't modify your spellcasting, so we have to fall back to the base assumption that class features refer to class features of that class (from what I recall it was another of those "comments in passing" within a FAQ, like the one above, no idea in what FAQ. Or maybe in one of the Devs comments to one of the Magus thread).

I think that in a home game any GM will allow the use of the bard spell slots, In Society games, it can generate problems.

Unless you consider taking an archetype that trades away inspire greatness and/or inspire heroics I fail to see the advantage of taking Greater Eldritch Heritage for the Imperious bloodline, unless you are trying to bypass "A bard cannot have more than one bardic performance in effect
at one time."

While you don't start or stop a bardic performance (and so Lingering performance don't work as it triggers when you stop the performance), inspire greatness and inspire heroics are bardic performances, so I don't think you can have them active while using another performance.

Not all bloodlines are written in a way that makes the eldritch heritage line of feats useful.

The Exchange

I agree with Diego, it has to be a sorcerer spell slot. To use a very blatantly incorrect analogy: “I looked really closely at the sorcerer class in the CRB, and nowhere does it say that I can only cast sorcerer spells known with sorcerer spell slots!”

Like other spellcasters, a sorcerer can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: Sorcerer.

the text never uses the term ‘slot’, it just says the maximum number of spells per day is on the table.

I get your view, but there is a FAQ that says that view is wrong, unless there is a reason it doesn’t apply.
