...but having COVID twice has given me long C19 symptoms, the worst being extreme fatigue and brain fog. The brain fog is the issue today.
So, a character can't have more ranks in a skill than their current level, correct? What about the extra rank for being Human? And then taking the Favored Class feature extra rank? Let's say this person is wanting to qualify for a prestige class, it doesn't matter which. But one of the requirements says, for example, a character must have 8 ranks in Sleight of Hand to qualify. So, if I'm understanding this correctly, and I swear I used to, wouldn't that make the character reach the 8 required ranks BEFORE making eighth level? If anyone can help a drastically befuddled GM out it would be greatly appreciated. And I'm serious when I ask to explain it like I'm the kid who licks windows in kindergarten.
Here's the text from d20pfsrd.com
"The number of skill ranks you gain when taking a level in one of the base classes is shown on Table: Skill Ranks. Humans gain 1 additional skill rank per class level. Characters who take a level in a favored class have the option of gaining 1 additional skill rank or an additional hit point . If you select a level in a new class, all of its class skills are automatically added to your list of class skills, and you gain a +3 bonus on these skills if you have ranks in them."

You can never have more ranks in a skill than your total number of Hit Dice.
Being a human gives you one extra skill rank to distribute amongst all your skills. So a Human Barbarian with 10 Int going from 2nd level to 3rd level would get 5 skill ranks upon leveling up (rather than the 4 a barbarian usually gets). She can put them into any skills she chooses, but no skill could individually have more than 3 ranks once she is done.
So yes, you have to have at least 8 levels of another class(es) before you could take your first level in your hypothetical prestige class.
When adding new levels of an existing class or adding levels of a new class (see Multiclassing, below), make sure to take the following steps in order. First, select your new class level. You must be able to qualify for this level before any of the following adjustments are made. Second, apply any ability score increases due to gaining a level. Third, integrate all of the level’s class abilities and then roll for additional hit points. Finally, add new skills and feats.

correct, the maximum is set by level or hit dice(there be critters that advance by racial HD).
Prestige classes set both general class level AND skill ranks as a requirement in one go.RAW Wording: I agree that the Human Race description should have used skill point rather than rank but after allotting them in the process they are the same.
I'm sure there's an overly pedantic argument that the specific rule overcomes the general prohibition but "never" has a clear meaning.
I'd also point out that historically in game play I've never seen the prohibition overcome.

I had pretty bar brain fog, but it didn't stay long enough to be considered long term. I hope you feel better.
Thank you. Except for those two things I'm back up to par. I spent well over an hour yesterday trying to remember a lifelong friend's last name. It's a hassle...LOL But I'll get there.

You have my condolences for suffering left over side effects of Covid. I hope you get better soon.
Maybe you are thinking of DND 3.5. Back then the skill cap was your level + 3 and you got extra skill points (x4) at 1st level. Pathfinder dropped that cap, removed the bonus skill points at 1st level, and instead gave you a +3 bonus if you had at least one rank in a class skill.
Pathfinder also changed cross class skills so skill points now give their full amount instead of counting as 1/2 a skill point. Also the cap back then was 1/2 of what you could have in a class skill.
The extra skill points you got from race and favorite class would have to go to other skills.
It was normal for characters in DND 3.5 to need reach level 5 before they could select a prestige class in the next. Yes, you needed to reach your qualifications at one level, then take the prestige class next.

I'm past the point where I can edit. I'll write what I would change here.

Dropped the cap to be equal to your level.

It was the design goal that characters could not enter a prestige class before they got to at least level 5. They would meet the prerequisites then. Level 6 would be the earliest you could have a level in a prestige class.

Thanks! I might have gotten rules crossed, for sure. I've played PF1e since it hit the shelves and I did the same with D&D3.0 and 3.5. I used to be able to recite this stuff in my sleep lol. Now every day is a new adventure in "What am I supposed to get done today?" So, I'm off now to look for the pants I wore yesterday...lol
Thanks again!
