Answer is ask your GM.
After thinking about it, siegfriedliner might be better off starting a thread in Advice about how people play it or what issues they have with it instead of trying to get a rules answer that we can't provide a consensus on.

I think there's.. 4? current threads asking about Eidolons and items.
Maybe they'll get Paizo's attention. Some day.
Right after they adress the shapeshifting faq... but multiple threads since launch and literally thousands of posts haven't made that a priority.
Almost as if the current FAQ/Errata system needs major work ;)
