Can I choose rune formulas as one or more of my starting formulas in my Formulas Book

Rules Discussion

The rules state that If I take Magical Crafting and am just starting my formula book I can choose 4 magical item formulas to know how to craft. Can I choose rune formulas or do they have to just be formulas for magic items in the magic item list. I assume I can but in herolab online, teh tool does not permit me to choose rune formulas as one or more of my starting 4 I must add rune formulas later.

Please clear this up.

Rune Formulas "can be acquired in the same way as an item formula."

But Magical Crafting says that "you gain formulas for four common magic items of 2nd level or lower." As far as I can tell, the only Rune that fits that criteria is the +1 weapon potency rune. So that would be the only one that you could pick as one of the 4 formulas granted by that feat.

I would think that they qualify since they are items and they have the Magical trait. But yes, most runes are too high of a level to get for free from the Magical Crafting feat.

Liberty's Edge

Runes are listed in the various Rulebooks as |Rune X| instead of |Item X| and therefore are not Magical Items, they're a separate category of thing, one which is not included in the "Magical Items" category that is provided by the Feat.

Runes are not Items, they're Runes.

"Rune Formulas

Source Core Rulebook pg. 580
The Price of a rune’s formula is the same as the Price of a formula for an item of the same level; it can be acquired in the same way as an item formula (described on page 293)."

As they "can be acquired in the same way as an item formula", it's a meaningless distinction that they aren't items. They are magical and you acquire them the same way: in this case, you are acquiring them from the feat "in the same way".

Under your interpretation, Magical Crafting can't ever be used to Craft Runes.

You can Craft magic items, though some have other requirements, as listed in Chapter 11. When you select this feat, you gain formulas for four common magic items of 2nd level or lower.

If the phrase "magic items" excludes Runes in the second sentence then it would also exclude them in the first sentence.

So how does one Craft Runes?

the more I read the rules for "etching runes" the more I think that you do not need magical crafting. Magical crafting appears to be needed if you are crafting a magic item like a wand, ring, staff, etc. The crafting requirements are specifically listed for some runes and it states only that expert in crafting is required. What are others thoughts?

A +1 sword is just a sword with a rune etched into it so if you're right then it wouldn't require the Magical Crafting feat to etch the rune.

But a +1 sword itself is a magic item so crafting one would seem to require the Magical Crafting feat.

So I'm genuinely confused.

Runes are perfectly fine.

Yeah, the requirements, costs, and process for transferring existing runes is a bit fuzzy. I remember saying something about it before.

But I would typically require Magical Crafting to create a new Rune if it has the Magical trait.
