Summoning Celestial beings?

Rules Questions

I’m currently running a True Neutral- Master Summoner that is currently 4th level.

I have noticed that some of the Summon Monsters look to have the option of Celestial or Fiendish Templates.

Let’s use an Eagle for example. (Summon Monster I)
Do I have to be good or evil to use Celestial or Fiendish Templates that reads as an option for the summoned eagle?
Or is that option decided when I choose to summon it?

Or since I’m True Neutral I cannot use Celestial or Fiendish Templates.?

That is at the base of the Summon Monster table. RAW you can summon creatures with either template. Consider that Summoning a celestial creature is considered a good act and summoning a fiendish creature is considered an evil act. In my eyes they are very minor evil/good acts, it all depends on how you use the summoned creatures. As you are a Summoner they last longer than the normal version spell of the spell, so their presence will affect you a bit more and, if you constantly use a single kind of aligned summon, I would see it as an "I depend on/support that point of view of the world" behavior.

You can ask your GM if he will allow you to use the Counterpoised template for your summons.

okay - so this is the 'original' post whereas others are duplicates

Celestial and Fiendish are two templates that are part of the CRB spell.
As noted, Neutrals can do either.
Other options usually cost a Feat. Clearly Spell Focus Conj and then Augment Summoning (free for this archetype at 2nd) are a priority.

the list of monsters you can summon IS limited by RAW. Expanding that list can be done and many do.

Arcane casters do not have any restrictions on casting spells of an opposing alignment. Most divine casters do have limits to casting spells that are opposed to their alignment or that of their deity. Oracles, and Shamans however do not have those restrictions.

However, since casting an aligned spell is considered to be an act of the alignment of the spell repeatedly casting them can cause your alignment to change. So as a neutral caster you can summon either type of creature. Favoring one alignment over the other can cause your alignment to change from neutral to the appropriate alignment thereby causing you to only be able to summon creatures appropriate to your new alignment.

If you want to maintain your neutral alignment, I suggest you look at the feat Summon Neutral Monster from the champions of balance. It expands out the list to include some neutral monsters and allows you to use the counterpoised creature template instead of the celestial or fiendish template.
