Star Trek: Prodigy

Sovereign Court

Very, very, very pleasantly surprised by the first episode. I decided to record it for my kids, and upon taking a peak at it, I couldn't stop watching... so... I'll have to watch it again with them over the weekend! :)

Thumbs up!!

I really enjoyed it. It had the slapstick sort of kid humor I expected but I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. It feels more like "Star Trek" than either "Discovery" or "Picard" does.

Its like Star Wars and Into the Spiderverse had a kid, but there was a falling out and Star Trek got custody. I can dig it.

That was very neat, Was not expecting to see one of Fugitive Zero's kind. really nice call back to the Original series that one.

It felt a little Star Warsie, probably because of the Droids. Generally don't see a lot of Droids in Star Trek.

in conclusion....they better beam up that cat-kid before they warp out of that place.
(Why is it you only see the Caitians in the Animated Star Trek shows?)

It's a bit kiddy for my tastes, but I didn't mind it, and it was cool seeing a Tellarite's argumentative nature being turned against him, a Medusan at all, and a Brikar! (Woo, Peter David got one of his original races into the wider canon!)

I'm puzzled by where they are, though. The three races mentioned above (and the Caitian) suggest Alpha quadrant, and yet there was a Kazon there, and those are Delta quadrant, and separated from us by light-years worth of Borg territory (and lack the technology, generally, to cross the distance between A and D in less than decades...).

I wonder what's going to happen to the dozens, if not hundreds, of other miner/prisoner/slaves, if the kids warp out of there. The big bad appears to also be leaving, the only thing he wanted there leaving also, and probably taking his favorite robots with him, so they are just going to have to fend for themselves? Without translators or a reliable food source? Yikes.

Then again, the ship is supposed to require a crew of 'about twenty,' so perhaps the kids will gather up some volunteers later?

A friend of mine suggested a possible explanation for the Alpha Quadrant species being there. The Caretaker could have trapped multiple ships from the Alpha Quadrant over the years, thus bringing some of the races we're familiar with to the Delta Quadrant. I'm not familiar with Peter David's Brikar. Which character was that?

The big rock girl.

Brikar in the PAD novels set in his Excalibur / New Frontiers line (there are over a dozen of them) are a Federation race known for their incredible density, wearing some sort of gravity-stabilizers to prevent them from denting furniture when they sit, because they are so heavy. Their density also makes them completely immune to the stun setting of most weapons, and even the kill setting just hurts them (and makes them angry), although they can be killed by enough firepower (and turning the phaser up to whatever 'deep-fat-fry' setting totally disintegrates humans).

The one we see in the books naturally goes for security, which fits the races big, tough design, so it's fun to see this Brikar playing against that and being less of a big scary bruiser by nature.

Very cool. Thanks!

Couple of things that jump out at me with Episode 2
"Hologram based on Kathryn Janeway, one of the most decorated officers in Star Fleet History" That would imply it has been a while since Voyager,

Federation covers both Alpha and Beta quadrants

and of course the Engine room with the two warp cores and the big ball of mystery

The Federation spanned the Alpha and Beta Quadrant at the time actual Janeway was tooling around the Delta Quadrant on Voyager.

Ok, so for the most part I like "Star Trek: Protostar". The characters are mostly very annoying, but that's probably because they're geared for younger characters or something. I mostly watch the show for the ship itself. I'm a Starfleet geek. I love Starfleet's ships. A lot. The Protostar Warp Drive is a pretty neat thing. But I do have one serious question; why doesn't it have a transporter?? There have been a few moments when it would've been handy, but instead they land on the planet or use a cable to hoist someone up. That sorta bugs me. No, actually, it bugs me a lot. I also don't care for the way a functioning shuttlecraft can be replicated, but that's another rant for a different day.

I’m not sure the shuttle replicator bothers me much. If Dr. Crusher could use it to replicate organic materials like blood, I’m okay with replicating a small ship component by component.

Been wondering about the Transporter myself. Could be as simple as They don't know they have one. Holo-Janway is doing her best here but in a lot of cases they have to ask her for stuff before she'll bring it up.

and she totally knows they aren't Starfleet Cadets. You can just tell, she likes these kids and thinks they have potential, but she is not buying their Bull for one second.

Ok so

Protostar was helmed by Captain Chakotay.
The Diviner has been looking for it for 17 years
and before him others had Tried and failed

I'm thinking we are looking a minimum of 20 years between Prodigy and Voyager, if not longer.

Also, Merp....potentially indestructible

The Holodeck Kobayashi Maru scene was *chef's kiss* perfect

"Know your role Jelly-Man"

Well...they have discovered the Transporters

and they have used them for; Random Floor Pie

Also Ferengi still suck, so whatever measure Rom had planned, not sure if they took, or maybe this lady is an outlier holding on to the old ways.

Yeah, she strikes me as a criminal, even by Ferengi standards. One of the things Quark took pride in was that Ferengi never had legal slavery. Selling Dal definitely puts her in criminal territory.

Fair point

It dose give Dal and Gwyn an interesting bonding point though. United by crappy parental figures

Dal seems to have taken his attempts at the Kobayashi Maru to heart here and is giving things a real think now.

I'm a little worried about Rok... she clearly spent a LOT of time alone in her time fragment. Considering how young she seems to be...there is no way that doesn't have an effect on her.

Loving the uniforms

and WTH is Merp???? Is it like a Flerkin with an extra-dimensional stomach

Doubtful, as she not only owns a ship but wears clothes and earns profit. The old ways would prohibit her from doing any of the above

Are you volunteering to go look?

Nice first season, lots of questions answered and a new problem to deal with for season two.

Oh that was only the mid season finale before Prodigy goes on hiatus.

only mid-season really...so gonna be less than a year long wait. I can live with that

Ok 2nd half so far has been fun. The Kids are on the run cause they can't even communicate with Star Fleet without triggering the doomsday weapon. Admiral Janeway is in hot pursuit, unsurprisingly she seems like she is getting impressed by the kids.

and Merp.....again WTH is Merp? Merp has evolved into it's 2nd form and is now their Security chief.

Oh don't you dare pull a Next Generation season finale.

I always hated how they would end a season with Part 1 of 2 cliffhanger and then you have to wait until the next season to see how it ends.

That was an epic episode. So many cool moments and punch-the-air moments when familiar starships appeared, and a really massive cliffhanger ending.

Well bugger
Prodigy has apparently been yoinked
In a nutshell; the people running Paramount+ decided not only to not go ahead with season 2 but are pulling season 1 off their service as well. Season 2 is in post but it's not going get to air unless they can find another station to show it.

Awww.. what.. why ?

Officially for the Tax writeoff, and that is likely a big part of it, after all Corporate is more interested in bottom line than anything else.

but there is also the fact that these shows pay residuals to the people who worked on them for as long as they are in the library. Each show that gets yanked out cuts into the income of the writers who are currently on strike. Just a little bit of extra leverage for the studios

I wonder how many shows will return after the strike is settled

Well well well

Interesting bit of news, Looks like Netflix is picking up Prodigy for seasons 1 & 2

wooot!
