Galt is not at all equivalent to France the way World of Darkness is to modern day.

For one thing, nobody in Galt speaks French and the food isn't as good.

Have you even been in Galt, or are you just spinning typical Andoran stereotypes of the place?

You could certainly argue that the combination of constant turmoil, iffy relationships with your neighbors, a lack of a colonial empire, and the general anti-elite zeitgeist in Galt would inhibit the development of a haute cuisine.

“You really need to learn more about history.”

I know plenty of history, you should try reading it and Golarion’s history and learning they’re not the same thing, and certainly not interchangeable.

“Galt is not a meme version of revolution”

The Reign of Terror didn’t even last a year, Galt has been in it’s state for 50 years. So yes, meme version was an apt term.

“Qadira is in fact the only satrap in the inner sea region.”

So, wrong. Also you’ve been using the word wrong, Satrapy is the government, Satrap is the government.

“It is a mashup of several eras of Persia, but the connection to Persia is obvious.”

And no one has claimed it isn’t inspired by Persian aesthetics, but to claim that since they used Persian words it has to perfectly map to certain periods of Persian history and function exactly as is is utter nonsense that you came up with.

“Really it is obvious that Taldor is the Byzantine Empire. The only thing missing are chariot races.”

It’s inspired yes, but again convoluted politics (hey Cheliax and Isger) and the term “prefectures” is not unique to Byzantine and it doesn’t make Taldor an exact copy that follows a script. It’s inspired, there’s a difference.

I am French. The French Revolutionary Terror was one of sources of inspiration for Galt. As was the Russian Soviet Revolution of 1917. But AFAIK Galt is very different from France in a number of meaningful ways. Where are the Chouans for one ?

Same for Taldor and Byzantium : it was one source of inspiration, but another was Louis XIV's France.

If you look for a deep level of in-world consistency when looking at Golarion, especially by referencing RL historical periods, you will be deeply disappointed.

Golarion is a nicely crafted patchwork of settings inspired by pop memes where it is fun to adventure, with its very own cosmology/mythology. Do not look for anything beyond this.

By the way, a satrap is not a type of country – that is called a satrapy. The satrap is the governor who rules the satrapy.

Silver Crusade

Yeah that above was supposed to say governor for the second one, darn you autocorrect >_>

Huh. I guess Maximilien Robespierre was a giant worm from another dimension after all. The more you know.

Sure there are no deep historic treaties in Golarion and some differences, just look at the at the role of nobility in historical politics and the complete lack of that in Golarion.

But the "inspiration" like you call it is there and goes beyond the completely obvious (despite what some people who don't recognize it are screaming). The existence of the Ulfen Guard, the word Satrapy and the similarity between Sarenrae and the historic Persian faith shows that the designer had more than just "meme" knowledge of the sources he used. Which means that historical knowledge is quite useful as it shows you with what material the designer worked with and can help filling in the gaps. Although yes, this historical source ends at the border in most cases as each country on Golarion was likely designed in isolation and then everything was put together.

I do try to be conscious of the historical inspirations for certain settings when I run my games. It's no more irrational to me to "fill in" parts of Galt's history with that of the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror than it would be to have Kevoth-Kul of Numeria quote a line from a Robert E. Howard Conan book, or to borrow a paragraph of description from Bram Stoker's Dracula while a group is in Ustalav.

Does that mean my perspective is right? Of course not. Wouldn't dream of trying to come here and post that it is and everyone ought to agree with me. I write for a population of 5.

I don't interpret that tenet as forbidding suppressing slavery. I think the key words there are "respect the choices make over their own lives".

So I guess if they said they were a slaver but didn't actually engage in slave-trading or ownership but identified as such you'd have to respect their opinion on it? Doesn't seem too hard.
