Trait wording fix - Magical Lineage and Wayang Spellhunter

Homebrew and House Rules

Magical Lineage(Magic-basic) needs to read {fluff} "Choose a spell of First to Third level from the spell list of your character's first class and write it after this feat on your character's description. When you apply metamagic feats to this spell that add at least 1 level to the spell, treat its actual level as 1 lower for determining the spell’s final adjusted level up to 3 times per day. This trait works with up to one other feat or character class ability (but not other traits) that lowers the metamagic cost of casting a spell. This trait does not lower the cost or price for magic item creation."

Wayang Spellhunter(Region) needs to read Requirements:region Minitan, {fluff} "Starting language common(Taldan) is replaced by Minatan(see Tian Xia). Choose a spell of First to Third level from the spell list of your character's first class and from the schools of Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Illusion, or with a descriptor of [darkness, light, mind-affecting, ruse, shadow] and write it after this feat on your character's description. This trait does not lower the cost or price for magic item creation."
optional- "This feat can be retrained (like a Racial Trait) when gaining a new level (cost:200*new class level GP taking 20 nonconsecutive days)."

while some of that is a bit redundant, I think it's good to state it up front so new players don't get the wrong idea.

They should just be feats.

Just add "The benefits of this trait counts as a trait bonus, and thus does not stack with any other trait that has a similar effect".

^------- this, except add "counts as a trait bonus to that specific spell, and thus does not stack with any other trait..." that way Magical Lineage and Wayang can still both be used but only on different spells, and will not stack with each other on the same spell. And, I like the idea of being able to retrain it but since it is merely a trait (and shouldn't be as powerful as a feat), then have it retrainable only once in the character's lifetime. If you house rule this into a feat, then I think it should be retrainable every Even Level starting at level 2, 4, 6, etc., like Spell Specialization.

I think if you keep it un-retrainable, then players will abuse the Additional Traits feat to make it retrainable w/e they want.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Is it easier to change the general trait rule than these specific traits?

Rather than "bonuses" not stacking, change the word to "benefits" not stacking.

That's potentially a single word change that solves this problem and future problems along the same lines.

What do people think?

(I haven't got the text in front of me so I don't have time to check the wording in the general rule)

Yeah, that would be perfect. I can't think of any way to abuse this, and it still allows the PC to get both Lineage and Wayang but for separate spells.

Since it is homebrew, you can just tell the players at your table during character creation that these traits must apply to different spells to both be taken together. You don't have to change anything, just use simple communication.

Adding something along the lines of Improved Critical/Keen would probably work, too.

Like, don't be a freaking murderhobo @$$hole, the benefits of this trait do not stack with similar abilities that reduce the overall level of spells after metamagic is applied... or whatever...
