It's surprisingly kind of unclear. Fights seem to end at unconsciousness or surrender, but what if a bloodthirsty contender goes for a fatal strike, or someone is killed by accident? Would the tournament organizers provide healing and resurrection? If someone is killed in a match and comes back, do they stay in the tournament?
Anyone's ideas on this would be appreciated, especially if you've run or played in the original Ruby Phoenix Tournament!

By agreeing to participate in the tournament PCs "waive their rights in the case of death". I assume that means holding opponents and/or the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, or the Ruby Phoenix herself culpable for murder, manslaughter, or wrongful death.
Otherwise "A contestant who yields or fails to act for a count of three (3 rounds) shall be removed from the field and is no longer a contestant in the match." So, you have 3 rounds to rez or heal any fallen teammates or they're out of the match.
Since it is a team sport, if your team still wins you get to come back for the next match provided your character is still alive. If your team lost, you all lose.
I don't know how replacement players would work in this scenario, since the new team member wasn't part of any of Hao Jin's vetting.

I'm very curious about this too. My GM is telling us to expect a half dozen back to back encounters at level+ with no time to rest in between
Sounds impossible as described.
So the tournament doesn't expect you to kill your opponents then? That would make for a big difference!
There's no rule on team size is there? If a PC were to die, couldn't you just pull a replacement off the team's bench?

There are vanishingly few points where there's multiple encounters with no resting time between them - the more you rest, the more time might be tight, but at this high a level there are plenty of speedy solutions to healing up. Plus that's really only if you go for full hours - 10 minute rests should usually be fine, especially if you've got 2 medicine users.
However, I know based on other posts you've made that tend to run games hyper-lethally (your story from the Carrion Crown book 2 thread is still just disgusting in that regard) so I don't know how that's going to go for you.

The tournament definitely expects non lethal fighting, you get free artifact that turns all your attacks into non lethal after all (it says fights are until KO after all which by itself implies finishing off is illegal).
The "tournament isn't responsible if you die" clause is more of "tournament can't be sued if opponents break the rules, you die by accident or by dangerous monsters in the jungle". Aka you are still disqualified if you kill your opponents.
If that wasn't cause of disqualification, there would be no reason why Lightkeepers didn't cause a body count :p

Note that the Phoenix Necklace can be used to raise teammates at the cost of silver feathers. This implies that killing in the rounds is permitted (since otherwise there would be no need) but only if the opponents choose to fight to the death.
Do realize that the "Danger Island" has lot of dangerous wild beasts. Aka you might be killed by creatures unrelated to tournament in itself.
Again I repeat myself: Nothing in the ap implies tournament matches themselves are lethal or else you would break plot of the ap very easily :p

I believe this is actually covered for the Bonmu Qualifier, in the rules for it. Not sure about the later parts yet, but I would expect similar rules?
From the Bonmu rules on p9, end of the second paragraph -
'The slaying of an entrant during a challenge is entirely possible and
permitted, but if an agent of the emissary catches any team attempting to lethally harm an entrant outside of a challenge, that team is disqualified.'
