Trouble in book3 of giantslayer

Advice

So I'm the DM for my group and we have been doing giantslayer, but I've hit a major roadblock in book3 and am looking for input and/or ideas from ya'll.

In the valley my group found the gate encounter and manged to kill one giant and the two tigers, but the other giant fled to warn the encampment. After a short rest they went thru the gate and found the camp on high alert and way too many to fight (minus some cheese, that might work, but will leave one PC with the dragon's share of XP). They decided to go to a nearby dwarven settlement and warn them of the horde there.
As it stands they don't see the value in taking on the horde there or in willingly committing suicide, so any ideas one how to rectify the situation...? I'll try to answer any question or give more info if requested, thanks

Don't use xp. Use milestone leveling instead

Did one of the PCs use the Agrimmosh in the battle? If so, let word spread to that particular giantess with the vision issues, and have her attempt to reach out to the characters via magic. All they really need to do right now is get set on the search for the items needed to relight the forge.

I do understand the player's hesitancy to throw their characters into such a situation, and it doesn't get any better going forward. Giantslayer seems to require that the characters have one hell of a backbone and moral drive to punch through all the forces between them and their goal.

My proposal: Let them wait at the dwarven settlement. No giant shows up. When they carefully reinvestigate the valley, they will notice a few vigilant guards on patrol, looking out specifically for the PCs, but otherwise things are back to normal. A camp being on full alert for days seems unrealistic anyway.

This way players' choices and actions have consequences (the special guards), but you can also get back to the AP plot (cleaning the valley), with little modifications.

Damn nice responses, the vision plus the special guards will probably work quite well. Especially since the travel time puts it at close to two weeks, plus I can throw the named warrior at them with a patrol then. Thanks ya'll
