Is it possible to repair broken replacement picks for thieves' tools?

Rules Discussion

Okay, so a situation came up in my home game and I'd just check how these things interact.

There's a locked door. Player A has thieves' tools and replacement parts. He crit fails several times and has to go through his replacement parts.
Player B has Quick Repair.

Since the replacement parts are broken (not destroyed), could Player B try to fix those things? That'd mean basically two replacement parts are needed and they can cycle through them, repairing the broken parts when needed, and never have to bother buying more replacement parts (which at 3 silver apiece isn't really worth tracking after a certain point anyway)?

Since the crit fail condition of Pick a Lock says you can repair the tools, as well as use replacement parts, I'm inclined to say yes, but I'm willing to listen to more experienced players to see how much this would impact things down the road.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if you've ever tried picking locks. I am a beginner lockpicker and can tell you that you can't really repair picks. They are thin sheets of metal, and if they break you won't be able to fix them in a way to get the tension you need out of them to manipulate the tumblers.

Replacement picks are cheap enough though, and if the PC is constantly crit failing the door may just be too hard for them to open at this time.

I don't see why not. The crit failure effect of Pick a Lock mentions the picks are broken, not destroyed, and anything broken can be repaired by using Craft. Pick a Lock even specifically calls out using Crafting to repair broken sets of picks.

Repairing is already an option though, specifically provided for in the crit failure section.

The question is more a gamist issue over whether or not you gain a set of broken replacement picks that you can then repair separately or if the picks are effectively just consumed to instantly repair the thieves' tools.

I don't think it really matters either way, past very low levels the replacements are really cheap. If you have all the time in the world and no risk of being caught the GM might be better off just handwaving the whole process.

I would allow it.

Negatives: It doesn't fully match real life :{

Positives: It allows a second character to participate in the skill challenge. It makes that second character feel good about their choices of feats. It causes less information that needs to be tracked (can always assume that the thieves tools are all available between uses).
