Adding Weapon Accessories to Solar Flares

Rules Questions

Spotted a good question over on the TTRPG Stack Exchange.

Can a weapon accessory be mounted on a solarian's solar flare?

As far as I've been able to see, there's nothing explicitly stopping you from doing so, unlike fusions, that must be added to a solarian weapon crystal rather than the weapon directly. However, when you consider that your solar flare can be:

Quote:
"a shimmering crystal that launches fragments of itself, a dark aura that forms directly onto your foes, or an orb of stellar energy that releases beams of pure light"

...that doesn't exactly sound like a weapon with a rail on it.

Is there some text anywhere that establishes whether or not weapon accessories and solar flares are compatible, or is this GM discretion territory?

Accessories aren't specifically addressed, but with the solar flare also being something that disappears if it ever leaves your hand, it seems pretty unreasonable to me to expect to keep some accessory installed on it.

Whether or not it has a rail, doesn't it also disappear when you aren't wielding it like a solar weapon? So all those accessories would have to be re-added whenever you draw your weapon.

Of course accessories would drop off after you release the solar flare and it turns back into a mote. I wouldn't expect the accessory to hang out in your mote like the solarian crystal does. Reattaching accessories each time isn't too time consuming.

Sounds like a yea for "GM Discretion Territory" then?

definitely discretion territory, but I'm also wondering what accessory is so useful that you need it on a solar flare? I don't remember any really good small arms accessories.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A sniper scope is pretty handy.

And it only takes a full action to attach. If you're faced with one of those combats where the GM gives you time to pre-buff, I suppose you could, but overall the investment probably isn't worth the meager return.

If a player of mine asked, I'd let them pay the cost of one to add on to their solarian weapon crystal as a fancy, energy version of the accessory.

I mean, to be honest in most cases where my solar flare character in Dawn of Flames has fought it's pretty clear when we've been going into a combat, so my weapon is already out and ready to go.

I feel like it's relatively trivial to conjure up your weapon and attach the accessory and have it ready for the next series of combats. Your weapon only takes up one hand, so it's not like you're unable to do things while you're using your weapon.

It's also unclear how it should function if you have say "a bracelet that fires an energy beam" as your solar flare (which is what I chose) and how that interacts with the "if it ever leaves your hand it disappears clause" because thematically I would say the hand is free to use for whatever.

So far I haven't pressed the issue because there is little that requires two free hands to accomplish and I'm relatively certain the intent is for it to use up a hand, even though thematically it doesn't make sense.
