Oh, he is a very, very petty person. Or so he came across in my dealings with him.

At least know that there are many of us who also strongly dislike him and pretty much hold him in contempt. Not at all sure if that will help.

Please do what you have to do for your own health. But I'll miss you if you leave these boards. You've been a shining light in the darkness recently.

Hey, did things get deleted while I turned a page here? 'Cuz two posts does not equal six.

Yes.

My bad!

I deleted it because it came across as insensitive and rude and that's not how I roll.

I know, my wife has been known to tell me that exact same thing.

I don't like seeing people unhappy and my first inclination is to try to help solve it, which obviously isn't always the answer.

It's all good, I don't mind being corrected or called out when I'm wrong or being a jerk or insensitive or just generally unhelpful.

Also, my entire day at work was driving around and bailing out overwhelmed crews, so I was probably still stuck in "help at all costs" mode.

Why do I keep going back to the controversy threads? They get more toxic every single time I check in on them. Soon Paizo will have to start issuing Geiger counters so we can measure our exposure properly.

About to head to bed for LOTR readings.

Anyways, this was a weird birthday. Very quiet and isolated, with a lot of forum stress. But a few close online friends helped a lot, and I just finished playing TF2 with my girlfriend, which was a treat.

Fun fact of the day: Canonically, hobbits celebrate their birthdays by giving their guests gifts, rather than the other way around. Honestly, that sounds really cute. Too bad that would get absurdly expensive for me this time of year. XD

I know he knows because I told him, and his response was to emphasize the quotes further.

I may live rent-free in his head, but he lives rent-free in mine these days, and I don't want him in here.

deal with this at work all the time. It's part of my job. Hardest part too. Higher ups expect me to automatically know when to approach someone and when not to and a lot of times it just doesn't work that way.

I'm trying to wait for the end of the holiday break, on the off chance that the moderation team might need to confer before someone like TK can be banned. But even typing that out, it feels completely unlikely, and I hate being in this liminal space where I know I'll probably have to leave in the end. They aren't going to ban him. They aren't even going to make him change his bio. I wish I could ignore him, but I can't. He's too prolific a poster.

What fast food/local delicacy have you always wanted from NY? And what fast food/local delicacies do you have where you are?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hm... I don't know what's in New York, so I couldn't say! Over here, I think a lot of people like craft beer and wine, which Oregon has a lot of, but I'm not a fan of either. There's Burgerville, a local chain. They're serving a blue cheeseburger right now with blue cheese and mushrooms, and they're known year-round for their shakes, which use locally grown fruits (especially blackberries and filberts). Oregonians do love our mushrooms. There's also a lot of, like, sushi, and South Asian cuisines around here. My favorite local restaurant is a Mexican food place called Urban Deli that serves fantastic tortas and aguas frescas--it's disarmingly wholesome food that never makes me feel overfed.

It's hard to work out what we have that other people don't, honestly, but those are my best stabs at it.

Big day without much happening, and I've stayed up well past my bedtime.

I've been making plans to get a new place with my two girlfriends (and finally no longer live with my ex, which would be very nice), but I worry that I'm just repeating mistakes. It's awfully hard to get a nice place, though, and my Bellevue girlfriend has a very helpful income, meaning I wouldn't be the only income for the household anymore. She and another friend we're thinking about adding in are also gifted cooks, meaning we might finally be able to cut this Doordash addiction.

It's very appealing practically speaking. Is it smart for the relationships? Am I going to break things I didn't want to break here? I sure hope not. But less financial strain and kitchen workload on me would certainly be a relief that might make me a nicer person to live with.

Speaking of cooking, I made an excellent mac and cheese today. I like to freeze my jalapenos when they're starting to wrinkle, and then I can grate them into for and never have to mince.

I've also cut my workload a tiny bit--or rather, massively hiked the cost of the tiers that were giving me trouble, in the hopes that either people will cut their pledges or they'll at least pay me way more for the emotional toll it takes on me.

Feeling a bit better. I've been working more on my novel lately--I'm about past 2,000 words, in fact, since yesterday morning. Very excited about it. I am currently grappling with the serious question of, "Would dragons be transphobic?"

Tangent:
See, the rule of things in this setting is that the people of the great cities are transphobic, and maybe a bit homophobic, and probably a bit misogynist, and definitely a lot classist. The people of the countryside vary more widely, and trans people in particular tend to fare a lot better, even if nobody really has the language to describe them. The main character grew up in a distant village on the outskirts, and she doesn't even know that being trans is a "thing" with a name, let alone that anyone considers it a big deal--which obviously will lead to conflict when she goes to the capital.

But what about fairy and folklore beings like dragons and trolls? Insert "transphobic trolls" joke here. They're mostly going to be fairly adversarial or unpleasant or alien, and I could see them serving as unpleasant embodiments of the status quo.

That said, after thinking about it, I realized a major plot point is supposed to be that she's exceptionally adept at casually dealing with unnatural creatures. It makes more sense that they'd serve as a benevolent force in this regard, similar to the village, and wouldn't match the cities' behavior. When she meets her dragon at the end, if it understands gender at all, it will not care to police it.

"You did something remarkable with that creature there."
Fret blinked down at her cupped hands. The little beast was currently nestling into them, as if they were a cozy bed made just for his personal use. "I just called him."
"Yeah, and he heeded. You be careful, lass, what you call with that voice of yours. There are bigger and sharper things than him out there that might answer."

I think I would go with the Fae creatures having no concept of gender or sexuality (homo v hetero v pan v whatever) at all.

They would, however, have sex with anyone or anything that may cross their path depending on their mood. Or just as likely kill and eat them. Or give them a hug and skip away jovially.

In this story, the fairies are very much creatures of folklore, and folklore itself is often steeped in the beliefs of those that shared it. You know, like "never trust a woman who lives alone". So I do think there's a fair argument that the fairies would exist within the bigotries that mingled with their creation, and be very traditionally-minded, and very cruel.

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

Depending on what power level you're ascribing to the dragons of your setting, a lot of them in D&D/Pathfinder/myth/etc had the capability to assume a humanoid form.

I suspect that they'd be more power-motivated than plumbing-motivated, unless a particular plumbing arrangement gained them vast coin for their hoard?

Re: Tangent:
In addition, does a dragon being transphobic help move the story, or weaken it? You've already carved that niche out for the cities -- do dragons in your story live in the cities?

Do they manipulate the hatred behind the scenes, because it's easier to control people who've been fed a steady diet of hatred?

No, the fairies and dragons are very much their own problem. That's not to say there can't be parallels, though, in the problems they cause.

CW for dysphoria/body hair stuff:
In this setting, trolls are promise-makers--they can essentially grant wishes to people, but naturally always twist the wishes horribly. In a tragedy from before the story started, one troll granted a series of especially cruel twisted "promises" to a trans woman knight who sought a more womanly form to please her peers. Things got so bad, she made her final wish be to possess the strength to kill him, thus shattering the promises and catching her in the backlash. The result was a dead troll, a form that was more dysphoric than ever, and an uncontrollable berserk rage.

Obviously, in this case, the troll was acting in as much a societal capacity as anything, and as such was a tool of transphobia as much as any abusive doctor or guardsman.

The original group of elves in my campaign setting are similar.

Alternately, the fae could be transgressive. Representing the fears that those traditionally-minded base their bigotries on. Steeped in those beliefs, but being examples of what tradition sees as deviance, rather than embodying the traditions themselves.

Whether they're still cruel or not depends on what else you need from them.

I think I may see many of these creatures as being kind of like Satanism--not truly transgressive, ultimately embodying the same values as the dominant structures,
just, well, on the other side of it. Just as Satanism is still fundamentally Christianity, so might the fairies be still fundamentally part of the traditional structures, just framed in opposition.

Or not. I think the fairies might come to represent a lot of things in this setting.

It gets weird when you're thinking of things as both embodying values of the dominant culture and as creatures of their own.

As representations, they can embody the perils of going against those dominant values. The point of them is to push you back into the normal frame. But that doesn't mean they as creatures directly enforce those norms or abide by them themselves.

thejeff wrote:

Yeah, Satanism is weird, huh? But that's how it's practiced in the real world. It's a Christian religion that defines itself by hating Christianity while still buying into a lot of Christian theology.

A talking wolf might embody the temptation to stray off the path or disobey authority figures and still act as punishment for those that do, still believe it's wrong to disobey authority figures, because that's the value system it exists within. The Devil might oppose God and still seem to believe that God is good and the Devil is evil and that evil must be punished.

Stories are neat like that. Why does the Devil still punish the wicked, when he should be rooting for them? Why does the Devil still hate God, if he believes God is good? How is "wow evil is awesome" a real motivation for anyone? Fairy tale creatures don't have to make sense.
