Number of prepared spells for Wizard

Pathfinder Beginner Box

Hello all. I am a new player looking for some guidance. I recently purchased The beginner box and the core rulebook.

On page 35 of the beginner's box player's handbook it states you can prepare 2 level 1 spells as a wizard. Then on page 38 it states you prepare one addition 1st level spell for a total of 4 upon reaching level 2. What did I miss or is this a typo?

According to the core rulebook on pages 204 and 207, it states if you specialize you gain an extra spell slot and cantrip. Is this the answer to the above question?

On page 35 of the beginner's box player's handbook it states you receive a school spell. Is your school spell always considered prepared? I assume this would be my focus skill and would be as stated on page 207 of the core rulebook.

As I would be specializing would I not also be able to prepare an extra cantrip as stated on pages 204 and 207 of the core rulebook?

Thank you

As a 1st level Wizard, using the Beginner Box rules, every day you can prepare spells from your spellbook

What is in your spellbook is
10 Cantrips (All 10 cantrips listed on page 36)
5 Level 1 spells from your arcane school (spells listed under your Arcane school on page 35)
1 School spell from your arcane school.

Every day, during your morning preparations, you choose
5 cantrips, and
2 Level 1 spells

You "prepare" these 7 spells, along with your school (focus) spell.

The information on page 38 is under the heading "2nd Level Wizard Class Features".

Ignore that page until you have leveled up to 2nd Level. That information does not apply to a 1st Level wizard.

Thank you very much for the clarification

Welcome!

I don't have the beginner's box, but unless page 38 also mentions the specialization, it's probably a typo, as your basic number of prepared spells at level 2 is 3, not 4. So, a specialist will have 4 slots of 1st level, but a universalist will only have 3 (but be able to drain bonded item to get a cast spell back).

School spells are focus spells, they don't need to be prepared, you just have them and can use them as long as you have focus points to spend. So yes, this is as described on page 207 of the core rulebook.

Yes, if the beginner's box doesn't say so, it's an omission. Possibly deliberate, but I'd heard they weren't making any differences between the core rulebook and the beginner's box.

That's not accurate. There are a lot of simplifications and omissions, and in some cases, new material, and changes.

The Beginner Box rules don't follow the CRB exactly, so you really need to read through the BB Hero's Handbook and Game Master's Guide to spot the differences.

Ah well that's a bummer. In any case, I hope you have worked this out to your satisfaction, Sovetkii.

Satisfactorily answered. Thank you both.

I'm a new player too and recently found this issue too (2 years later).

Only specialists wizards in beginner's box, so as i understand correctly, on first level it is 2+1 prepared spells for wizard, no?

Here is my newbie interpretation. In the beginner box, it grants you two spell slots at level one (p.35) plus your school spell. At first, I assumed that the school spell was your 3rd spell. But something about that did not make sense to me. So, I am assuming they forgot to add that you "gain an extra spell slot (beginner guide does not even use the word "Slot") for each level of spell you can cast. You can prepare only spells of your chosen arcane school in these extra slots" to the Beginner Box Hero's Handbook.

Late to the party, but the BB makes no mention of "focus spells" as such. The implication of the discussion of "school spells" is that you don't need a spell slot to cast them (just like cantrips though the BB doesn't say that). So the BB 1st level mage starts with two spell slots, just like the CRB 1st level mage. The "four" in the description of 2nd level abilities is unfortunate, because it's saying that you get four spell slots at this level. You don't, you get three, just like the CRB. But you can still cast your school spell without a spell slot for it.

The BB Player's Handbook (PH) does talk about taking 10 minutes to regain the ability to cast your school spell, it just doesn't call it "refocusing".
