How to make a lasso

Rules Questions

Hi. In our last session my character decided to make a lasso. I thought it would only require a rope and maybe a dexterity check, but our DM ruled that since the lasso is as an exotic weapon, making it would require a craft check with DC 18, as the skill describes. Is it right? It seems to me a little too hard and time consuming for a knot in a rope. Just curious if there is an official ruling on this.
Ty for the help!

A lasso is just a net in a different shape.

The description is "it's a simple knot".

I would say, if you character had reason to know of a lasso, they could tie one. If they character were proficient in it, I would let them do so without a check, just spend a standard action.

I guess the real question is, what should you set the DC if you're not proficient...18 seems to high to me. Considering it is really just a simple know, it's just really difficult to use without experience.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Technically the DC is 18, yes. Which means that with 3 1/3 cp of raw materials (1 foot 8 inches of hemp rope) and about 11 minutes you can make a lasso if you can hit that DC, by the craft rules. Which is getting silly, I'd suggest to your GM that repurposing a reasonable length of rope at a lower DC is less silly.

growing up around cowboys and actually knowing how to use a lasso, it's more than just a simple knot in a typical rope. the lasso itself is a special braid of rope, heavier and stiffer than the rest of the rope. and the while there is a special knot to use to make a lasso, they are more typically back woven eye splices.

So, I could see just allowing a quick knot to make a lasso, but I would apply a penalty to it's use. to negate the penalty, I would require some kind of craft check.
