Create Pit in an area of Black Tentacles

Rules Questions

I have a question about casting "Create Pit" in an area where "black tentacles" has been cast. 2 PCs are grappled by the black tentacles, the wizard casts create pit as a clever way to break the grapple to free the pcs. They fall 10 ft by choice of wizard not to make it 30 feet... Does this work? Or do the Black Tentacles go with them to the bottom of the Pit? Thanks...

black tentacles is a spell, that can be cast in mid air, it doesnt go anywhere.

but lack of ground doesnt break a grapple. the grappled PC is still held in place by the tentacles and would still have to be freed to fall

Also if the tentacles weren't strong enough to support their victims weight almost anyone could break free. And further 10' isn't that far - in D&D the tentacles were specified as being that long ('This spell conjures a field of rubbery black tentacles, each 10 feet long.'), and so falling 10' wouldn't be far enough away to escape them in any case.

If you do assume that they could somehow get free this way then I think the bottom of the created pit is essentially another spell effect and wouldn't have tentacles sprouting from it. But there's three different reasons IMO that it wouldn't get that far.

I'm not sure that's true ...

This spell causes a field of rubbery black tentacles to appear, burrowing up from the floor and reaching for any creature in the area.

Having said that it shouldn't matter too much, as you say the Tentacles could hold a person up, so the Grapple wouldn't be broken just because the pit appeared.

Very interesting, thank you for your responses, that will help me in the future! Reach up 20 feet, well that makes quite a difference!

...oh 10 feet, my bad!

What I would say is that if you open a 15 foot pit under them and then they escape the grapple (or if the tentacles fail their grapple check) they'd fall into the pit and be out of reach of the tentacles and could heal up and sruff from there. So it could still be a little useful.

The Exchange

I agree with the general idea of what MrCharisma said. If you opened the pit under someone, the tentacles would still hold them in place until either the PC escaped or the tentacles failed to maintain. However...

Black tentacles is a 20' radius spread.

So it actually matters where in the tentacles they are. If the PCs are at the edge of the tentacles, then jumping in a 10' pit would take them out of reach. (But why wouldn't they just walk out of the tentacles?) If they are right at the center, then even a 20' deep pit will still be filled with tentacles.

Surprised the heck out of a PFS group one time with this. The PC flying 20' up thought he was safe when the black tentacles erupted. When he got grabbed the one flying 10' up was sure she was doomed, but she was close enough to the edge to be out of the radius.
