Ranger Combat Styles, do you get them, or use a feat to get them?

Rules Questions

I couldn't find this looking through other posts, and I'm worried that it's an obvious answer, but I'm not sure about it from how it's written in the books

Combat Style Feat (Ex)

At 2nd level, a ranger must select one combat style to pursue.

The ranger’s expertise manifests in the form of bonus feats at 2nd, 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level. He can choose feats from his selected combat style, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites.

The benefits of the ranger’s chosen style feats apply only when he wears light, medium, or no armor. He loses all benefits of his combat style feats when wearing heavy armor. Once a ranger selects a combat style, it cannot be changed.

"He can choose feats from his selected combat style" is a little vague to me.

Do you get to choose a feat and have it added as a bonus feat, or are you just able to take it on a level up where you get a feat?
Sorry if this is obvious, just want to make sure it's ruled right.

"The ranger’s expertise manifests in the form of BONUS feats..." --you get it in addition to the ones you get at every odd level.

Bonus feats:

"The ranger’s expertise manifests in the form of bonus feats at 2nd, 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level."

The Exchange

It’s a “bonus feat.” As in an extra feat. The combat style you choose determines which feats are available and what level you can take them at.

For example if you choose “archery” as your combat style, then at second level you get one of the following for free: Far Shot, Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot, or Rapid Shot. At 6th level you get another free feat, and in addition to those options you could also choose Crossbow Mastery, Improved Precise Shot, or Manyshot.

You pick whatever Combat Style you want. That choice narrows your choice of bonus feats.

Thankyou so much! It was obvious, but me reading over it again and again it just didn't register.
Sorry for the question, but thank you all for the prompt reply!

No need to apologize. It's always better to ask than to remain unsure.

One other thing to remember with Ranger (and Monk) bonus feats is that they let you ignore all prerequisites.

You can take Precise Shot without needing Point Blank Shot, or Shot On The Run without Dodge or Mobility (Archery Style).

You can take the whole Two-Weapon-Fighting feat line without needing any DEX (Two-Weapon-Fighting Style).

You can take Shield Master at level 6 despite the fact that it usually needs +11BAB (Weapon-and-Shield Style).

This rule ONLY works with bonus feats (and only for Ranger and Monk as far as I know), and you only pick from one style. So if you want to take Shiled Master and Improved Two Weapon Fighting you either need the DEX for TWF (and take W&S Style for Shield Master) or you have to wait till level 11 for Shield Master (and take the TWF Style to cover your DEX).

This means you don't get as many feats as the Fighter, but you can make your feats work for you in a way that the Fighter can't.
