How to apply for a game?

Online Campaigns General Discussion

I see several threads about how to make a good character application, but I don't see instructions anywhere for how to use the forum to apply for a game.

Are all of the games in recruitment PBP, they don't seem to say what format they are in.

What does "create an alias" mean?

How can I tell what system a game is using?

If there is a recruitment thread, does that mean the game is actively recruiting? Some of them seem to have been there a long time. If not, how can I tell what games are actively recruiting versus just still being listed?

Is there a guide for how to make a character and post it to the site? To be clear, I am not looking for character creation help, I am looking for info about how to put my character on the forum.

Thank you,
Jacob

PBP means Play By Post. That's the format. It means that you play by making forum posts in the game thread.

On these boards, it means to use your character name to create an alias to use when you are posting 'in character'.

To create a new alias for your account
1. Scroll to the top of the page and look for the menu :My Account: Cart: Help:
Hover over "My Account".
2. From the drop down menu, select "Account Settings", and sign in to your account.
3. On the left side, scroll down to the "Message Board Aliases" section. Click the "Create New Alias" button
4. Type in the name of your character in the "Avatar Name" field.
You can skip the other choices for now, if you like, and come back later.
5. Click the "Submit Changes" button.

Now, when you make a post, underneath the text box you will see a dropdown menu called "Post As". From this menu you can select which alias you want to use when you make a particular post.

The recruiting thread will tell you what system is being used. The breadcrumb is

Community>Forums>Online Campaigns

This is the link to that forum

Use the Recruitment Subforum to find the most current recruitment threads.

The forum posts are arranged with the most recent post at the top of the page. Every individual post has a date or time stamp in the upper right corner. The original post in the thread will tell you when the thread was started.

Once you have created an alias, you can fill in the character sheet.

My Account>My Profile>Aliases
Click the name of the alias you're creating a character sheet for.
On the alias profile page, on the far right at the top, click "Edit My Profile"
That will give you access to the character sheet.

Remember that some GMs will want you to fill out certain fields on that page differently (ie using the 'race' field to put in your class and level). Once you have been accepted into a game, follow the GMs directions.

When you see a new recruitment thread that looks interesting, post in that thread to let the GM know you want to be considered for their game. Don't go too many pages back, and pay attention to when the GM started recruiting.

Belatedly adding something to CrystalSeas' excellent reply:

The existence of a recruitment thread does not mean the game is actively recruiting. All campaigns on the boards have a potential recruitment thread, and it does not go away after recruitment is over. Normally you can tell recruitment is finished because toward the end of the thread you will see a post from the GM confirming the new recruits for a game. I expect the reason recruitment threads do not go away has to do with limitations on the board's functionality--but a long-going campaign may use its recruitment thread mid-game if they need to add new players to the game because old ones have left/disappeared--so a recruitment thread that has an old start date but is showing new posts is likely the result of a re-recruitment.

As CrystalSeas noted the recruitment subforum will default to posting most recent so those are more guaranteed recruitments. HOWEVER, if a recruitment thread says "closed recruitment" that means a GM is not recruiting from the boards, but likely has already recruited elsewhere. (Personally I find it annoying when GMs who do closed recruitments use recruitment threads at all--why spam the board with a thread you don't want other people to read?--but some of them use the available recruitment thread for chargen for the preselected players instead of general discussion.)

Be patient--a lot of recruitments get a large number of applicants. If you can provide genuine assurance that you can post regularly and let the GM know when you can't post, a good GM will look for that.

Piggybacking on this question: Is there a forum here where people recruit for discord/roll20/fantasy grounds etc games, or is it all pbp?

You have the Online Play forum. Although I think nowadays most of online gaming is organized in parallel Discord or Google groups you cannot check without login in.

The Online Campaigns is only for PbP.

Some games are for those mediums, but most are not. I think about one in twenty? If not fewer.

EDIT: Ninja'd by someone who knows more than me.

I believe that forum, which is located inside the Organized Play Subforum, is specifically for PFS and SFS games only.

Unless a rule was made recently that I somehow missed--and folks should correct me if I am wrong--this is not true (and Sensen, you were correct). I have definitely seen many folks use the Recruitment sub-subforum in the Online Campaigns subforum to run a campaign elsewhere, whether Discord, video-based, or a virtual tabletop site like Roll20 (or all of the above), and I don't think there's a rule against it. Here's an example of a recruitment thread that takes place on Discord and Fantasy Grounds.

This said, certainly the vast majority of the recruitment threads here are for PBP here on the boards, as they are designed to tie into a campaign hosted here on the boards. I have certainly seen fewer non-PBP recruitments of late, but my presumption is that's more likely due to folks using those other media finding other recruitment options I am not aware of because I only play PBP.

You can also look for non -finder Society non-PBP online playing opportunities in the Gamer Connection subsubforum of the Gamer Life subforum. That forum is primarily for face-to-face recruitments but folks also recruit for things like Discord-based play there, especially since the pandemic.

Confirming that there's no restrictions on using the Recruitment forum for any sort of game. The closest thing to a rule people have is more of a courtesy: If you're recruiting for a PFS or other organized game, put something like [PFS] in the title so that people can see it's that sort of game without needing to go into the thread.

But yeah, PbP, Discord, even on another forum, it's fine.

With the emergency of VTT use through this remote-work year, and as Paizo Game Space is dead, I come and rescue this request from the River of Lost Threads.

There is a subforum for Organized Play that gathers a lot of VTT Online Play attention, while people at Online Campaigns are basically focused at PbP and requests for VTT tend to pass unobserved. The Gamer Connection offers opportunities but I think it is a bit difficult place to find as compared with something called "Virtual Table Play" or something more meaningful for people trying to find people to play with in the post-COVID era.

Thus, I think having a forum, or subforum dedicated to remote VTT play, can help pull like-minded people together and serve to start up interesting projects on that quickly growing way of playing Pathfinder and other roleplaying games.

Yes, I would appreciate that. Most potential VTT sources are either all 5e all the time, or poorly designed user interfaces, or both. I strongly prefer VTT to PBP but it is quite difficult to find Pathfinder-specific VTT anywhere on the internet.

Oooops! Sorry! This last post I sent to Website Feedback _:D

In here I had made some post similar to this but somehow previous post ended here too (I suspect because I was editing both in parallel):

And I stand corrected myself xD

GMDQ and Andostre has given you good advice, but VTT play at the recruitment really rarely takes much attention, and sometimes is even flagged as wrongly located. The thing is people on this subforum is mainly interested in PbP. People in Online Play instead are mostly focused in VTT play, and that is the reason I still think you can find there more like-minded people that might be interested in VTT non-PFS adventures, more than in here.

Then I added I had resurrected a threat at Website Feedback requesting a specific subforum in order to pull people interested together in a way easier to find both at the website and through Search Engines.

This is a fast replacement of what I wrote before. I hope it makes more sense now XD
