What are the "must have" low-level items?

Advice

I'm relatively new to PF2 and I don't have a lot of experience playing it yet. I've got two level 2 Society characters, and they both have a pile of gold and no idea what to spend it on. So, what's the equivalent to PF1's antiplague/antitoxin, Cloak of Resistance, and so on? Stuff, both magical and mundane, I'd want to collect over the first few levels or so?

For information, one character is a flurry Ranger, so a Striking weapon seems obvious, and the other is a Cleric with Druid dedication (pure caster).

Doubling Rings are a must for two-weapon fighting, likewise a Minor Sturdy Shield for a shield user. You should probably have at least one of the lowest level Potion of Healing, just in case. For arcane or primal casters, a 2nd level Wand of Longstrider is just +10 feet speed more or less permanently. Maybe a Bag of Holding, as the lowest level version is only 4th level, and the Staff of Healing is also pretty solid for a caster with healing spells.

But I think the biggest one is Skill Items for any Skills you want to be really good at. That +1 you can get with 3rd or 4th level items is surprisingly meaningful and you want it.

Those are all that leap to mind below 5th level aside from the +1 Striking weapon you've already mentioned.

Shadow Lodge

Weapon +1 Potency Rune for any weapon user (Striking runes are level 4+, so you probably can't afford them yet).
Consumables are generally too expensive to routinely use and become obsolete fairly quickly if you hang on to them, though I seem to recall PFS gives you some for free (haven't played PFS since PF2e launched).
Picking up cold iron and silver weapons can be very helpful if you aren't an archer.
For actual magic items, you'll probably need to hold onto your gold for a little bit, as most of the stuff you probably want will start in the level 3 - 5 range (bag of holding, goggles of night, various skill buff items, etc).

Armour may or may not be helpful. Chain shirt is 5, breastplate is 8. (Fullplate is 30 but I don't think either of your characters are interested with what you've said.)

Wayfinders I think are traditional. And a hands-free light source I think.

Then again, think 'What do I wish I had earlier that I couldn't afford?'. Chain shirt and breastplate are a small part of that of course, but other tools might not be amiss.

And if nothing else the Bottomless Stein is level two and 25gp for Cayden Caillean's followers.

There aren't as many must-have items in second edition as in first, really. Also, items have more strict level limits when you can get them. Remember that you can only freely buy stuff with a level no higher than your own, except that you can already get level 2 items at level 1.

Level 1
* whatever kind of armor works for your class, as long as it lets your Dex+Armor add up to 5 (6 for heavy armor).
* a shield, unless you have a good reason not to (such as using both hands for weapons, or feats that require a free hand). Even monks and wizards can use shields.
* adventurer's pack (contains basics like backpack, rope and rations)
* a +1 potency rune on your primary weapon
* any tools you need to use your skills, like thieves' tools, healer's tools or repair kit
* a few different weapons, giving you more options to exploit weaknesses/dodge resistances
* a flask of holy water. If you run into a nasty fiend and the whole party just all toss a flask, that's an ex-fiend even just with the splash damage.
* a healing potion, just so you can guaranteed stabilize someone who's Dying

Level 3
* doubling rings if you use two weapons
* a few alchemical bombs of different flavors. Even if you aren't trained, the splash damage can trigger weaknesses of swarms, plant creatures etcetera, or you could hand them over to someone more trained. It gives you a good backup plan against enemies you can't handle well.
* some kind of ranged weapon, if you didn't have one already

Level 4
* a striking rune on your primary weapon, if you regularly use weapons
* if you have Shield Block, a basic Sturdy Shield

level 5
* a +1 potency rune for your armor
* if you can cast it, a wand of level 2 longstrider, because +10 speed for the whole workday is that good

Level 8
* a +1 resiliency rune for your armor

That's everything that I think you need to have. This will usually not swallow your whole budget, by design. The level-gating on items ensures that you can't spend all your money on "core" items to get ahead of the curve, so you have money left over for other stuff.

There are usually good items from a few levels back that are eminently affordable. Good options include:

* silver and cold iron weapons (may need to transfer runes or use the Doubling Rings trick)
* a second magic weapon, particularly a ranged option, or one that deals damage of a different type than your main choice
* items that give bonuses to skill checks
* bag of holding
* wayfinder

Bort's blessing when you hit lvl 5 is very nice.

That item is not part of the core of apg and only appears as an rare item...

I would argue that there aren't any "must have" items in PF2, aside from keeping the maximum possible number of runes on your main weapon.

This said, the list Ascalaphus made is very good. Rather than "must have" items, I see it as a list of desireable items. Meaning that if you don't have any of those things, your character is still "viable". But they are all very cool things to have.

The new 'Aeon Stone (Pearly White Spindle)' seems like a very good low level item:

Price 60 gp
Usage worn
When you invest this aeon stone, it slowly starts healing your wounds, restoring 1 HP every minute.

The resonant power grants you resistance 1 to negative damage.

At low levels, that healing could really add up over the length of a day (search the room for 10 minutes and recover 10hp at the same time).

It is Uncommon, but still very nice for its price...
