Movement and Attacks of Opportunity

Rules Discussion

I am slightly confused about the rules of Attacks of Opportunity in cases where a character has multiple reactions. The AoO is triggered by using a manipulate or move action within range, making a ranged attack, or leaving a square during a move action it's using.

Now, what's confusing me is cases where something moves through multiple threatened squares with a single move action. Does that trigger only one Attack of Opportunity, or can one character use both of their reactions on the same move? I know that you can only use one action in response to a given trigger, but would leaving each square count as a new trigger or does it count as only one because it's the same move action?

The trygger says

Quote:
A creature within your reach uses a manipulate action or a move action, makes a ranged attack, or leaves a square during a move action it’s using.

I say then it does.

Or else, they would have simply mentioned the first part, with no need to add the "or leaves a squadre during a move action it's using", since the fact it's using a move action is enough to trigger an AoO.

1st trigger: Declaring to use a move action

2nd trigger: leaving a square

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The latter (it's the same move action so it's the same trigger).

CRB p474, Move Actions That Trigger Reactions wrote:

Some reactions and free actions are triggered by a creature using an action with the move trait. The most notable example is Attack of Opportunity. Actions with the move trait can trigger reactions or free actions throughout the course of the distance traveled. Each time you exit a square (or move 5 feet if not using a grid) within a creature’s reach, your movement triggers those reactions and free actions (although no more than once per move action for a given reacting creature). If you use a move action but don’t move out of a square, the trigger instead happens at the end of that action or ability.

Some actions, such as Step, specifically state they don’t trigger reactions or free actions based on movement.

Thanks, I hadn't been able to find that rule but that clears everything up.

The reason for the odd language w/ moving is because it's typically only the beginning of an action (or sub-action) that triggers Reactions.
A person beginning a move action outside reach wouldn't trigger afterward for that action. They could move freely into and within the reach of the other character. Adding the additional language about leaving squares allows for such AoOs after the action's initiation (if they do more than just enter reach that is).

Liberty's Edge

Additionally, a creature only has one reaction per turn unless another is provided by some other means. So if a creature has multiple reactions to choose from they have to make a careful decision because once the reaction is used, it is gone.

I think OP was wondering if a fighter with Combat Reflexes getting two attacks of opportunity per round can use them both on the same trigger, which is a no.

Oh right.

I totally forgot about that possibility.

Definitely this.
