Curse Terrain?

Advice

I like the idea of laying one of these spells over an area to be explored by PCs, but can anyone think of any cunning methods to further ward it against Dispel Magic, beyond just jacking up the CL?

The spell would be permanent. How does the evil caster protect their investment in cursed terrain?

The tenacious spell metamagic helps. If the PCs don't necessarily know that it's curse terrain exactly, then stylized spell helps conceal that (dispel magic vs. a spell needs to actually name the spell), and decoy spells would help that further.

Just jacking up the CL is a valid tactic though.

Layers. Like an onion...

Cake! Everybody loves cake. Cakes have layers.

Layered defenses are usually best. Multiple instances of the spell at various caster levels, with differing metamagics... even the lesser versions have to be dispelled individually if the greater version is also present.

Cool, thanks for the ideas. Stylized Spell was a metamagic I was not previously aware of that seems ideal.

Re: layers, this would undoubtedly be good advice, but gets expensive re: permanency. I guess none of my players are going to audit my BBEG, though.

When it comes to affording cool stuff, my NPC's always have mysteriously deep pockets... ESPECIALLY when it can't be picked up by the party as loot. Then you can just casually throw all shackles of WBL right into the trash.

They are bad guys, they do bad stuff.

The PC's usually earn their money... and you can only get so much money, so fast through legitimate means. My NPC's aren't burdened with morality when it comes to accumulating wealth. They will steal from children, churches, and the elderly... it should be so obvious to the players that the NPC's aren't bound by the same codes that they expect it.

You definitely shouldn't feel obligated to explain it. Lol.

You could give the BBEG or someone around him the oracle's Scourge curse. That should be safe from dispelling since these curses cannot be removed without the direct aid of a deity.

NICE!

EFFECT

You are a blight on the natural world. Bizarre natural hazards develop within a 300-ft radius around you whenever you linger in a natural area for more than 10 minutes, as lesser curse terrain. You cannot choose the hazards or their locations. However, your movement is unimpeded by undergrowth, as a druid’s woodland stride ability, as plants wither away in your footsteps.

At 5th level, add feast of ashes to your list of 2nd-level oracle spells known.

At 10th level, add explosion of rot to your list of 4th-level oracle spells known.

At 15th level, add swarm skin to your list of 6th-level oracle spells known.

Yes, indeed. That curse looks ideal if the range weren't so limited. Certainly an interesting option, thanks.

I wonder how many PCs have selected that curse?
