Oracle [Ancestors]

Rules Discussion

Hi everybody,

given what came out in these months, our group decided to rearrange our party.

Since nobody seems interested in playing support/heal/tank, I was thinking about switch from champion to oracle ( Ancestors ).

It seems underpower, but the concept is cool.

3 Spirits and 50% to get the spirit you need.

___

Here comes my doubts and concerns:

1) Focus spells are meant to work as spell for what concerns the "spellcasting" ancestor? Or it's just ( I hope so ) related to Cantrip/Spells? Feels strange not being able to use revelation spells and focus powers.

2) Is it just an oversight or they deliberately decided not to give Effortless Concentrations to Oracles?

3) From what I happened to understand, there's the possibility to take spells from the deity list which has one of your domains, but what about different domains? Are oracles meant to just play with option A or B?

Finally, what do you think about this being viable or not? What could be a good dedication class ?

1) If you don't have the spellcasting ancestor active, you take the penalty to all "cast a spell" actions, which includes focus spells.

2) They apparently did it deliberately. One of the other casters, cleric or druid I think, also doesn't have it.

3) You can only get spells from gods who share one of your two domains.

I think it's viable, invest in ranged weapons for strikes (or weapon and shield), skills and skill feats for that ancestor (Bon Mot, demoralize stuff, I think there might be some religion combat feats in Gods and Magic). You just need to be flexible. And realize that you roll your ancestor at the end of your turn, so as a free action you can warn your party what your restrictions are before their turn begins. They can potentially help set you up.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

1)all spells unfortunately, despite their origin. So innate spells, focus spells, etc, are all "spells". I would hardly say that not being able to do a focus power for 1-2 rounds counts as "lock you out". And worst case scenario, if you REALLY need to do that Heal/focus, you could still roll for it with similar chances of failure as regular concealment.

3)you're talking about domain spells? Each mystery has access to it's own revelation focus powers and 2 domains.

Ancestor doesn't seem underpowered to me, in fact it seems like one of the best allrounders of the oracles imo. It's chance based what you'll get, but both strikes and spells should be easily covered. The "bad roll" for combat encounters will usually be "skill".

Thankfully, Cha has some really good skill options like Intimidate or Bon Mot to cover those. Additionally, you could even go strength focused (probably backed wih something like sentinel archetype for heavy armor) and use Maneuvers like grapple or trip for those rounds (especially if you want to "tank")

Thanks everybody.

Talking about skills, athletic checks, even if they give map, count as skill checks, don't they?

Correct.
