Hi all, looking for a rules clarification on attacks that ignore hardness (such as shattering blows barbarian feat) going against a character with a shield that uses shield block. Would you ignore the hardness (up to the value of shattering blows) of the shield therefore doing more damage to the creature?

Example 1: defender has shield raised with a shield that has hardness of 5 attacked by above barbarian with a damage roll of 45 and uses shield block reaction

Result 1: Defender takes full 5 Damage then the rest is split between their self and the shield... (totaling 25 to defender, 20 to shield)
Result 2: split all 45 damage between shield and defender
Result 3: shattering blows feat doesn’t apply to shield block
Result 4: some other option

Example 2: defender has a Shield raised with a shield with a hardness of 15 Attacked by the above barbarian with a damage roll of 45 and uses shield block reaction

Result 1: defender takes 5 damage, ignores 10 and the rest is split between defender and shield (totaling 20 to defender and 15 to shield)
Result 2: defender ignores 10 damage and split the remaining 35
Result 3: shattering blows does not apply
Result 4: some other option

Thanks in advance

A shield can increase your character’s defense beyond the protection their armor provides. Your character must be wielding a shield in one hand to make use of it, and it grants its bonus to AC only if they use an action to Raise a Shield. This action grants the shield’s bonus to AC as a circumstance bonus until their next turn starts. A shield’s Speed penalty applies whenever your character is holding the shield, whether they have raised it or not.

Raise a Shield is the action most commonly used with shields. Most shields must be held in one hand, so you can’t hold anything with that hand and Raise a Shield. A buckler, however, doesn’t take up your hand, so you can Raise a Shield with a buckler if the hand is free (or, at the GM’s discretion, if it’s holding a simple, lightweight object that’s not a weapon). You lose the benefits of Raise a Shield if that hand is no longer free.

When you have a tower shield raised, you can use the Take Cover action (page 471) to increase the circumstance bonus to AC to +4. This lasts until the shield is no longer raised. If you would normally provide lesser cover against an attack, having your tower shield raised provides standard cover against it (and other creatures can Take Cover as normal using the cover from your shield).

If you have access to the Shield Block reaction (from your class or from a feat), you can use it while Raising your Shield to reduce the damage you take by an amount equal to the shield’s Hardness. Both you and the shield then take any remaining damage.

If you use hardness 5 shield block on a 50 damage normal attack, you and the shield each take 45 damage (which probably destroys the shield).

If the attack was a Shattering Blow, both you and the shield take the full 50 damage (Hardness 5 - 5 = 0). Note that if you are facing an opponent with access to a level 16 feat, a 5 hardness shield isn't going to cut it in any case.

If the shield had Hardness 15, you and the shield would each take 40 points of damage (Harness 15 - 5 = 10).

It would reduce the damage blocked by a shield
Also both you and the shield take damage. Shield block is not something you can user repeatedly without cost.
Think of them as weird temporary hit points that can be regenerated (Repaired with crafting) during a rest. But it's better at blocking lots of small blows, and worse at big blows.

So #1, the shield block is completely pointless (5-5 =0). Defender takes 45 damage, and the shield 45 points. You damaged your shield for nothing.

#2 The shield blocks (15-5) 10. Then the shield and the user take 35. That's still 10 more HP that the user would of had. Shield may or may not be broken at this point, depending on what you have.
