If damage is the only thing that matters, then you probably will have more success by making a Giant Barbarian with Fighter MC. Just pick double slice for the two attacks without MAP (only a -2, because you want non-Agile weapons). Double Gnome Flickmaces will certainly give it an even bigger edge.
That's a lot of damage with high accuracy and reach, this way you can show your friends their place with your superior high DPR build.

I love the Monk class and I also think that it is very effective. But a lot of the benefits and power of a Monk are undone by having a gaming group or even just the GM that don't play to those strengths. In a Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger style battle, where the enemies line up on one side of the screen and the party lines up on the other and everyone takes turns spamming their most effective damage abilities - Monk sucks. Martial Artist on a Fighter or Ranger base class would be much better.

i actually love running martial artist on an animal barbarian as a free archetype variant rules character. when not raging you have a stance youc an use and when raging you still have the very nice univeral martial artist feats, combine with high athletics skill with jumping skill feats and raging athlete and you have the mobility you need tbh. if you really want more, take fleet+ another rage feat that gives increased movement.

Just tracked damage for the night. Flurry ranger was a 100 points off the reach fighter in less than ideal circumstances. Missed two attacks due to invisibility. Fought an opponent I couldn't hit due to a damage aura per hit and high damage resistance. And had to switch to bow for four rounds to attack flying creature. Still managed to get within 100 points of the fighter with some big crits.
Flurry ranger is pretty beastly. Much nicer build.
The ranger is just a really well built class. I am pretty happy as I've always liked rangers conceptually.

Appreciate the backup. My group does play this way. I know not everyone plays this way, but my group definitely into optimization. If a class can't be built in an optimal fashion, then my players will know. They will feel bad about not standing out. They get glum and start asking me to fix things. I leave it alone until I see a good path for house rules that will make the group happy.
I wanted to make sure I have a character that isn't massively overshadowed by the other characters.

Every gaming group is different. Your fun is no less valid than someone who makes a joke PC that has no combat potential. Just different goals and desires from the system.
But yes, I think everyone agrees, in optimal combat oriented groups both the monk as well as the champion are going to lag behind because they are not designed for damage being a primary shtick.
I love monk. But if I want to do damage the other martials are simply better.

Couldn't agree more. I pretty much exclusively play monks (love Love LOVE the 2e monk) because I like all the other cool (often mystical) things I get easy access to. But I don't pretend any of my monks are gonna bring the hurt like a fighter or a barbarian would.

I'm going to try a monk champion or monk maneuver defender in the future. I don't get to play a damage martial too often. I usually DM and another guy is DMing. I didn't feel like playing a guy in one of the few campaigns I get play in rather than run that is some way behind the damage curve guy compared to the fighter. I wanted to unload some damage this time.
