Please help name my ship

Advice

I'm making a Free Captain of the Shackles who has his own sailing ship. I would appreciate help naming it, as I keep coming up blank. The character is incredibly invested in linguistics and code breaking skills and abilities, so I kind of want something clever that represents that well. Possible tie ins to the Skull and Shackles adventure path could be fun too.

Something riffing off the word "Colossus"? Nothing particularly related to S&S, but there are thematic links to seafaring (the Colossus of Rhodes) and code breaking (the Colossus computer).

Does Golarion have the equivalent of the Rosetta stone?

If so naming after that could be thematic.

Or maybe something like True Speaker (a reference to True Speech that celestials had).

In cryptography, a key is a piece of info that transforms encrypted text into plain text and vice versa so I suggest something like 'The Song and the Key' where song is a reference to spoken language and key is a reference to code breaking.

Or you could go with something more connected with the location and call it 'Besmara's Key' and if you don't want to reference Besmara directly you could use 'The Lady's Key'

For whatever reason, when it comes boats our group totally loses all seriousness. Our last two boats were named “Cirrhosis of the River” (more a barge technically), and the “Unsinkable II”

I really like your suggestions dpb123! That's very much along the lines of the ideas I was looking for.

Yeah, when we ran Skull and Shackles (I was the GM) our players named a number of their ships, as well as their fleet:

NSFW:

Since the players created an entirely female party known for their whore houses, they named their ships to suit.

- War Wench, warship/flagship
- Moist Wench, sailing ship/vanguard
- Little Bastard, longship/scout

Their personal squadron was called "Wench's Revenge" since they were actively pursuing Captain Barnabas Harrigan for most of the campaign.

The entire fleet (consisting of multiple allied squadrons) was dubbed "The Red Tide."

You could go with (what I assume to be) a pirate method- get drunk, look up dirty limericks, write some things down, and then (while nursing your hang over) you can pick the best sounding/most legible thing you wrote down.

I'm glad you liked it. I was a linguist during my academic career (graduate work focused on morphosyntax of tense/aspect/mood in various languages) so I felt a connection to Captain Black :)

Oh, I just realized key can also refer to a a kind of island (as in the Florida Keys) so you get that play on words for free :)

Glad you like him! I just loved the thought of making a barbarian who was not only literate, but who was probably more well spoken and knowledgeable of language and the written word than nearly every other living being.

"Abaft My Tobacco"

Spoiler:
It's an anagram of Boaty McBoatface.

The first thing that came to mind is the Savvy Translator:

1) I'm a translator, and it's the name of a newsletter and podcast from our professional association.

2) It's a subtle play on the word "translator": in the linguistic sense, and the mathematical sense (moving a shape along a vector).

Not many people will get it, but those that do will probably find it very clever, which seems very appropriate for your codebreaking character. ;-)

How about Polyglot Cipher?
Since Polyglot is also a language used in the Shackles, you have a nice tie-in.

I've always been partial to the ship name "Whispering Batfly".

(and bonus points if you recognize the name!)

I like they Key idea as well. My mind went there and also to Jack Sparrow insisting that a ship is more than a ship, it is freedom, so I submit “freedom's key.”
