does Black Tentacles take damage from aoe spells? specifically would it take damage from its caster's aoe spells?

Yes, but the tentacles regrow, so it would perhaps free someone from the grapple, but it would also cause damage to the character, and if the character ended their turn in the area, they'd be grappled again.

Good question. Personally, I'd give the Tentacles a save with the caster's spell casting ability modifier vs an AoE. And I'd say they should take damage from AoE spells from the original caster the same as anyone else. After all, fireball will harm your allies or even yourself if in the area. I don't see why the Tentacles should have immunity.

Given that no Saves are provided for the Tentacles, that's probably going to end up being a GM call.

idk maybe the tentacle counts as an item and as such is immune to spell damage not targeted at them.

depends entirely on the GM.
