Confused about Sorshen (spoilers)

Return of the Runelords

So, I've only skimmed through the books but I don't get why she doesn't just intervene directly, considering she's CR 27 she should be able to mop the floor with everyone in the first 5 books at least.

Its a tactical decision on Sorshen's part. You don't necessarily want to send your queen into combat early on in chess, especially when your opponent doesn't know where you are to begin with.

Sorshen is also aware that a direct fight between an immensely powerful evoker like Alaznist and herself would have some REALLY bad fallout for anyone/anything within a 100 mile radius. Sorshen has recently developed a sense of morality and is significantly less inclined to let innocent bystanders get hurt because of her choices.

More to the point, if she provokes a direct conflict with Alzanist before the PC's complete the repairs to the timestream in part 6, she's facing a CR 30 (or more) Alzanist who still has all the power she stole through her "Timey-wimey Shennanigans"... She would likely lose badly, so she's trying to be tricky and subtle (which is her preferred method anyway...).

Yep, she actually voices that directly to the PC's when they ask that likely question, more or less "Do you think I lived to a 1000+ years by putting myself in danger, when I can reach those goals perfectly fine by supporting proxies?" :p

She does say, however, that she would intervene directly if the PC's fail.
