Compatibility Between 1st Edition Products and 2nd Edition

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hey folks,

I was just curious if could use the previous class decks when I play 2nd edition. I really enjoy the class decks for some odd reason, so I'd really enjoy it I could use some of those decks.

I'm also curious as to whether or not I should buy the last two first edition sets. Does anyone have any input on this?

Finally, and I'm sure this one is the rules, how does one go about adding first edition cards to the second edition cards? Let me know if anything needs clarification.

Thanks,
Grabnar

Using old cards and characters with the Core (+ expansions) can be simple or difficult, depending on the exact card or character used. Some survive the translation easily, and some don't. But in principle all 1st edition cards can be used in the newer sets.

The rules for transition/conversion are found in two different places:

- the Transition Guide (p. 26) in the Core Rulebook

- the online Conversion Guide

In at-home PACG games, there are no rules far adding 1st edition cards to the new Core. Throw in whatever you like and have fun.

I would probably play through the Dragon's Demand (Core) and Crimson Throne campaigns before purchasing any old sets. If you tire of those - or find the old campaigns really cheap - you might dip into Mummy's Mask (1st choice) and Wrath of the Righteous (2nd choice).

Do you have a link for Dragon's Demand? I cannot seem to find it.

Also, should I worry about the class decks I don't have? I'm kind of a completionist.

That's the adventure path in the new Core set.

The character sheets for many class decks can be freely downloaded (link).

The character sheets that aren't included in the above package - the ones from the later class decks - can be downloaded from BGG.

So unless you're doing tons of organized play, owning all class decks isn't a requirement. You can still use the characters. Though a few classes use cohorts (Hunters, Witches, Summoners, etc.), so you'd need to purchase their decks to obtain the cohorts.

Another reason to purchase a specific class deck is for the support cards. Playing an alchemist in Rise of the Runelords wouldn't really work, for example, as there are no alchemical boons in RotR. In that case, you'd want to purchase the deck to add the class deck's alchemical boons to the RotR box.

I would disagree to some extent - there are quite a few Alchemical items in RotR, including Blast Stone and the ton of potions. There are virtually no other things for alchemists like bombs, support equipment and such.

I think you will run into more trouble using Gunslinger characters in any set outside Skull & Shackles, or Corrupted-boon dependent characters in anything beside Wrath of the Righteous.
