Counter Performance

Rules Discussion

How does this counter action work exactly? Let's say the enemy is attempting to Frighten the group (visually, let's see Fear spell) would I be able to use Counter Performance to prevent it? Or how does it work exactly?

We have a game in 2 hours could anyone help out?

It would not work against Fear spell because it don't have the auditory or visual trait.

But it works on visual effects like Collor Spray, Mask of Terror or Auditory ones like power words and command.

Monsters like minotaurs, owlbears and harpies usually have actions with these traits as well.

Its a composition spell that costs 1 focus point and can be used as a reaction.

Spoiler:
COUNTER PERFORMANCE FOCUS 1
UNCOMMON BARD COMPOSITION ENCHANTMENT FORTUNE MENTAL
Cast [reaction] somatic or verbal
Trigger You or an ally within 60 feet rolls a saving throw against an auditory or visual effect.
Area 60-foot emanation
Your performance protects you and your allies. Roll a Performance check for a type you know: an auditory performance if the trigger was auditory, or a visual one for a visual trigger. You and allies in the area can use the better result between your Performance check and the saving throw.

Could I just tell my GM during game if I'm not sure if the effect is auditory or visual, can I just say "I use Counter Performance?" Is that reasonable/legal?

Everyone can do an acting or comedy performance and they can be both auditory and visual at the same time. It’s only an issue if you have an instrument or a dancing scarf that only supplies an item bonus to one category of performance.

The power states "You and allies in the area can use the better result between your Performance check and the saving throw." Would this mean if I rolled poorly on my Performance check only I would effectively suffer, and my allies could use their own Saving throw instead?

"You and allies in the area can use the better result between your Performance check and the saving throw."

If you roll poorly on the performance check, you also use the better result, between the performance or your saving throw. Not just your allies.

So effectively I get two chances, the performance check and also a saving throw against FORT/WILL/REFLEX and I take the better result. That's pretty strong.

It is a very strong ability, in the cases where it applies.

Which situations do you like to use it best with? A dragons frightening presence? Are there other good situations you like?

Frightful Presence does not have the Auditory or Visual traits, so it would not apply to that.

It would, however apply to the many monsters with some kind of roar/screech/howl ability (most of which are AoE fear, but some inflict other conditions).

Horizon Hunters

Would it work against the Demoralise action under intimidate skill?

No, demoralize doesn't involve a saving throw, and Counter Performance is written to only work for saving throws, not for boosting your DC against abilities where the aggressor rolls. Which does create a very meta divide.
