Ops you are right, it becomes medium at level 6 with Mature Animal Companion and can become Large at lvl 10 with Savage Animal Companion.
Yeah its not large until you choose to make it Savage at level 8 or 10.

On the flip side your pony automatically turns into a horse when it becomes a Mature Animal Companion. (large pony?)

Yeah, what bites is that your tiger that goes Nimble gets stuck at medium. Every animal other than horse gets stuck at medium unless they go Savage.

We really should be able to have a HUGE dire horse.
Myself, I'd like the option to keep my animal companion small.
Automatic scaling to large size would make a companion a problem in some cases, like when you have to leave it out of narrow places. Having to leave out a companion that you use as a mount makes a bit more sense. So, I welcome having a choice, too.
About ponies, why, don't they just become horses when they grow up?
(That's actually a recurrent joke I make to my wife, it gets her mad :D)
