Improved Familiars ?

Rules Discussion

What ever happened to improved familiars?

I miss the little pseudodragon doing crazy things, not to mention the fluffy white winged maine coon that kept eating peoples rations and leaving dead rats in their place.

Any idea if Paizo will bring back the improved familiar ?

I don't know about something on the scale of a pseudodragon or a faerie dragon, but the enhanced familiar feats can give you 4 traits for your familiar, which lets you build a pretty convincing version of some of the cooler familiars. My gnome is going to have a cotton topped tamarin with darkvision, speech, a climb speed, and usable hands, which seems like it should be enough to get in a lot of amusing trouble ;-)

Familiars already cover some of this. You aren't limited to animals they have stats for, you can take the abilities that get close to your chosen familiar idea. For pseudodragon, Flier, Speech, Darkvision, and Scent get a lot of the old one back. Your Dragon can still eat rations and leave dead mice in place, can still fly around and speak draconic, can still sneak through the night and sniff out prey. Telepathy and Poison are missing still, and depending on how you preferred pseudodragons you might find Manual Dexterity more important than Scent.

The tamarin sounds fun :)

Could he use wands if the spell was on his master's list?

I admit I also would love an Improved Familiar feat which would allow you to take the effects of the familiar and layer them on top of various CR 1 creatures, basically one for each "type" of monster. A Pseudodragon for Dragons, an Imp for Devils and Quasit for Demons, an Alchemic Ooze of some sort, a Cassisian Angel, Arbiter Aeon, Voidworm Protean, Lyrakian Azata, and so on and so forth.

I don't know what sort of level restriction there'd be on that, but I don't think it would be that powerful if given the basic restrictions of familiars. I just want my chaotic good Fey Sorcerer to have a Lyrakian or Voidworm and to actually have those abilities. They're so coooool!

I love Tamarins! My favorite type is the Golden Lion Tamarin. My local zoo is part of the breeding program to keep them from becoming extinct. They are just wonderful animals.

They're pretty spectacular animals, our local science museum has a bunch and my daughter used to spend a lot of time watching their antics. I went with a Cotton Topped Tamarin because clearly my gnome is going to have to dye its hair different colors ;-)

You can have those now! Tour Familiar can be any Tiny animal you want, it still uses the stats and abilities from the book.
