Return of the Runelords conversion to 2E [NO SPOILERS]

Conversions

Grand Lodge

I knew the hardest part about converting Return of the Runelords(1e) over to Pathfinder Second Edition was going to be money and loot, an now with seeing the final Wealth By Level chart in the 2e book I am worried!

The WBL of second edition is quite a bit lower than I thought it would be. I had originally intended to just log all of the loot gained then divide the values by 10 (since silver is now the new standard as opposed to gold in 1e) but this still would put 2e players way way over WBL. 1e APs have always given more wealth than the WBL chart, sometimes even doubling it or more (Return of the Runelords follows this trend) but conversion in this way puts players at 8-9 times over the listed WBL.

am I doomed to just wipe the loot all together and hand pick everything that drops for my players? I was hoping there was a slightly easier way to do this.

LEVEL-----PF1 WBL------PF2 WBL
2---------1,000 gp------30gp
3---------3,000 gp------75 gp
4---------6,000 gp------140 gp
5---------10,500 gp-----270 gp

Any thoughts? I know the GM guide is coming out later this year and will hopefully give some guidance on this matter but I was hoping for something now!

Item prices have also been adjusted by different factors, for example:

level 1 scroll - 3gp instead of 50gp (17x)
level 1 wand - 27gp instead of 750gp (28x)
smallest bag of holding - 80gp instead of 1000gp (13x)
feather token (fan) - 12gp instead of 200gp (17x)

I'm not touching the +X items since they have been reworked since the playtest. But generally it seems like you should be just giving similar-purpose items of appropriate item level and 1/10 of the coin/gems rewards, and things should roughly work out.

Personally, I think the skill DCs may be the most difficult part to convert...

Most of the other conversion threads I have seen have been in agreement that you pretty much have to handle treasure from scratch.

well, since there will be a dc table one can somewhat estimate based on level and how hard the check is what it should be now, admittedly it is a bit a question of 'foes it feel right' which is also up to the group and playstyle

As said above, I would create a list of the plot important or thematic treasure / items and then do the rest manually.

Some things to be aware of
- Populating WBL does not mean you need to hit that exactly, often we need to overpopulate because players will miss items or not find direct use for the items (sold items are only half price after all)
- Looting everything in sight will be more difficult in some ways with bulk, even if you include the players investing in bags of holding and the like. Some parties will still do it but hoarders will regret doing so imo.

If you have fantasygrounds you can quickly list all of the loot in the adventure by looking at the packages for each AP issue. I used it to plot out my player rewards a couple of years back when I was running RotRL again (1e ofc).

Otherwise excel works a treat, if a bit slower thanks to the need to enter data.

It may or may not be easier to just redo the loot by hand, but if you wanted a 'simple' conversion, at least of the coins and art objects, this table will do it for you. (Using the level guide at the start of each AP chapter).

Magic items are harder, but they were always going to be, since so much has changed about them.

Does that do gold to gold? So at level 2, 100 gold becomes 3 gold?

Personally, I've found magic items to be pretty easy to convert. Item levels really help a lot for finding the closest thing, and I've found it pretty easy to make PF2 versions of plot specific items.

Yes, though like the PF1 WBL table it's based on 'how much money will a character have by this point' - so level 2 is more like 'Level 1 -> 2', which should probably have been noted.
