Replacement captain for Dead Suns Starfinder Game

Recruitment

I am GMing a Dead Suns Starfinder game. We are in the beginning of book 2 of the AP. (level 3)

One of my players had to leave the game and we are looking for a replacement.

In a perfect world, we would find someone who would be willing to pick up the exact same character. She was a Lashunta Envoy Character Profile.

Though I would be totally willing to allow any other character ideas. Ideally they would fit the "captain" role with higher charisma. That does not need to be a Envoy, either. I am up for creative character builds if you want.

If you wanted to make your own character follow these guidelines:
Any Paizo Race is allowed
Standard Point buy, and credits per level
All Paizo Classes. I am ok using the play tested ones too, though if there are any changes once the Operations Manual comes out I would want those changes applied to the character.

Storywise, the player needs to be on Castrovel. And is going to be asked to join in with the group.

Again, in a perfect world I would want someone to take over the same character that is leaving. I try to post about 4-7 times a week. I shoot for at least once a day, but stuff happens. I am pretty flexable, but I would want someone to try for that schedule.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Edit:
I will leave this recruitment open for a week (closing Monday the 22nd). I am going to be away over the weekend without internet, so no real reason to end till I am back anyway.

I feel like you'll lose continuity anyway due to the player just plain having a different style, thought process, writing voice, etc...

I'm familiar with the module but believe I'm pretty good at building a wall between player knowledge and character knowledge, so if that's not a problem with you, I might be posting a rough build sometime tonight or tomorrow night.

I'm assuming the characters are dealing with the mess at the university?

DM Nex:
My first thought would involve a younger guy who dreams of sailing the stars who works for the customs/gate jerks. He is the "clean cop" trope, refusing to take part in the criminal activities rife in the organization and ready to find a way to blow the whistle on them.

Yes, they are almost done with the University at this point.

And yes. A sudden character shift might feel odd.

@Everyone - I will leave this recruitment open for a week. I am going to be away over the weekend without internet, so no real reason to end till I am back anyway.

Dickie:

That would fit pretty well. They have not dealt with the customs guys yet, other to have seen them in the footage.

I think an easy in would be one of those "Here, he will join you while you are in Ukalom".. Required chaperone, that then tags along.

Something along those lines.

What are the other characters?

Lashunta (Korasha) Mechanic (exocortex)
Android Technomancer
Human Soldier (Starfinder Forerunner)
Halfling Mystic (Star Shaman)

A writing challenge? I'm up for picking up the character as-is, though I'd have to read through a bit to see how the character feels.

What's the intended posting frequency?

I shoot for about 4-7 posts a week. Though as a group we have slowed down a bit, partly because of the player who had to leave.

I am hoping for a post a day, but as long as a whole week doesn't go by without a post its usually ok. We all have stuff come up!

As for a Writing Challenge. I don't want to have a formal anything, but if people wanted to write up a bit of a backstory, either for a new character or the existing one.. We can see how it feels. I want the other players to be able to have a say too.

FYI, the lashunta mechanic is a recent addition to the team after we arrived on Castrovel, which means the rest of us are the only members of the team to go through the Drift Rock together.

The android technomancer is our arcane support and hacker, though the lashunta mechanic has some hacking skills, too. She's been crafted to outwardly appear as an elf and has some history with her drow makers before joining the android abolitionist front.

The halfling mystic (star shaman) is our pilot, divine caster, and healer.

And I'm playing the Akitonian human soldier in an attempt to be a well-rounded "tank" for the party. :)

Zam (the vacated character/role) is also a native lashunta envoy from Castrovel, but she joined the Starfinders on Absalom Station with the rest of us when we started the campaign. We all unanimously voted her our captain after we acquired the Sunrise Maiden and she's been the diplomatic "face" for the party all along.

Neil did a much better job detailing out the group than I did.

Thank you Neil/Tylur!

FWIW, I had already checked the existing characters and come to the conclusion a face would be most helpful. Had been debating submitting an operative, but the character just feels more envoy. Leadership by pumping up others and being a rock.

So lashunta envoy, but male and spacefarer. He's about halfway there, will have him up in a day or so.

Gotcha. Posts per day are definitely dependent on the action.

Personally, I would love to pick up the character and continue forward in their current iteration, as it would offer a challenging opportunity to try to cleave close to their original version with minimal scene cut/new face disconnect that can occur to break the immersion (Aunt Viv, anyone?).

I can understand the desire to just introduce someone new, since the game has a certain amount of momentum built up behind it and it is slowing. Not to mention that I have no qualm with handing the character back if the original player returns.

Looking forward to hearing the consensus.

@Me'mori - If you feel like you can pick up the current character I would be interested in seeing it. It would mean reading through the story so far. Though If you have the time, that would be, hopefully, entertaining.

They will be "away from ship" for awhile, so the Captain role is not going to be as important for a little while.

They are in a point in the story that it would be really easy to fit someone else in. Maybe even have that person be a required addition, for various reasons. So either way would work, for sure.

I don't want to force people to pick up the existing character. Mostly I am looking for people who are somewhat dedicated, present, friendly, and active enough to not go quiet. Writing skills are less important than being willing to RP and really join in.

I'm on the search for a Starfinder game for some time now and would love to join.
About taking over somebody elses character i'm very sceptical though, since i did something like that once and was never able to make the character fully mine.
I would prefer to make my own character, even though they could be pretty similar.
Additionaly i imagine i meet the criteria you ask for :D
4-7 posts per week would also be perfect, since i check the forum several times daily usualy.
Preferably my posts aren't long stories, but more shortish and interactive, aiming at communicating with coplayers and NPCs.

@Hayato Ken

Yeah that sounds great. Interactive is very important, vs having each player in their own bubble. No novels are needed.

Excited to see your character idea!

Hey there, Starfinders!

I've been desperately wanting to play Starfinder ever since it came out, and I've had... mixed success, to put it lightly. One of the latest attempts was this here Captain Davir Karst, a man who's allegedly a space pirate, smuggler, and a charmer. All while being (legally) dead.

Mechanically, he's a Borai Space Pirate Solarian, melee based, and Captain oriented. Getting him up to level 3 should take little time. Nat'raly. Flavour-wise, he's a Diasporan-born, cant-slingin', blathersome scoundrel of a man. Yet, his 'live fast and die young' motto has hit a particularly unusual roadblock, since he appears to be at step three of his two-step plan, and on an alien planet. Redemption, meaning of life and pondering of the soul are definitely on the menu for him, even if he looks about as honest as a grav-car dealer.

Backstory:

Kashtu considered himself, in all regards, a rather adventurous, even daredevilish type. After all, a scavenger has to be ready for anything in space, whether when to dodge a pirate ship, pretend to be an upstanding citizen when a Stewards' cruiser rolls in, or even when 'rescuing' cargo under pressure from a seemingly derelict light transport, with a Castrovellian Orbital Enforcement frigate on the long-distance scanners.

His loader-bots started shuffling off the cargo, a rather large amount of contraband alien, ahem, controlled substances. The Port Authority guy would be on his 'break' for no more than ten more minutes, and that alone took a substantial amount of Kashtu's dwindling finances. The bot, though, was almost done with the important stuff, so the scavenger pointed his attention to the last, unusual piece of salvage. A single lifepod, a piece of debris piercing the transpared aluminium lid. Scans, obviously, showed no lifesigns. Although..., an impossibility shocked Kashtu from staring at his wrist PDA. The pod was looming open.

"Now, then, m'good man.", a ragged, deathly voice with a chipper undertone announced from behind him, the fake warmth of the voice supported by the unnatural feel of 'cold' and 'sharp' in the back of the lashunta's spine. "Turn 'round, and stay out of m'thoughts, ye mind-speaking mind-peeker." The daredevilish instinct within Kashtu evaporated like mildew under a jet engine, as he swallowed and turned around to stare at the man in question.

A tall, thin human, he pondered, though he immediately scratched that assumption from his head. Humans, Kashtu knew, didn't have ashen-gray skin, nor viciously glowing red eyes. The man in front of him, however, was in possession of both, a flashing white smile and a weapon seemingly made of solid darkness pointed at Kashtu's chest. The man looked disheveled to no end, a wekk-old stubble on his ashen chin, his hair a mess, and his miner's longcoat covered in dust, over a bruised and battered marine armour. "With yer lips, tell me where am I? I'm guessin' planetside, by the sunshine outside."

"C-Castrovel. Sir.", Kashtu blurted out rapidly with his thickly accented Common. "Ah.", the other man's voice replied roughly. "Well, that explains the lashunta!", he laughed out almost manically, as he lowered the sword. Kashtu felt his heart beat for the first time in thirty seconds. The zombie pirate's eyes seemed to scan Kashtu's cargo bay, and a small smile crawled onto his face. "Ah, ye're one o' my people. In that case, Captain, I reck'n I'm in your debt." Tapping his hand on the last remaining crate of contraband, he snapped his fingers. "So keep that. Debt paid, before the int'rest sets in. Ha!", he roared out, before leaning in a terribly physical and close hug onto Kashtu's terrified shoulder. "Now, m' fellow captain. Where's a man's got to go and celebrate his wake 'round here.", he whispered in his ear.

The answer in his ear, Davir Karst, formerly Captain of The Impromptu Getaway, strolled out into the Castrovellan sun, greeting it as he'd greet a mother. "Oh, ye old Sun, aren't ye a darn fine beauty!"

I'd like that. I am currently reading up and getting a feel for the character— would you like a sample by the time the deadline rolls around?

If you are up for it, yeah that would be good. Nothing huge, whatever you feel comfortable doing. Thanks!

As much as I'd love to join in on this I am going to bow out. I just too much going on right now and don't want to be slow posting guy at the start when interaction would be important for a potentially new character. Good luck and have fun!

Here's my idea of an envoy so far sans backstory and character, which will follow over the next days.
The feats i wrote under "future feats" would be exchangeable with the feats it took, longarm prof. and specialization if you think the additional damage isn't really needed.
Let me know what you think please!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here is my sample for picking up Zamasea De.

Drifting Downtime:
Inhale.

Even the air that blew by on the warm breeze made her smile, an almost jubilant expression that turned to a wide grin that was as bright as her shock of aquamarine hair, feeling the tug of the wind blow against her from her exposed position on the pinnacle of the promontory. The sensation sent electric thrills down her limbs, nervous jitters of adrenaline starting as she stared out at the beauty of a sea of green. Native Castrovel.

There was nothing like the feeling of coming home, or maybe it was the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The air was heavy with moisture, the low roar of Jamaar's Cascade dwarfing them by the sheer scope of the falls. For her it was equal parts thrilling and humbling. The horizon was dark, the rumble of the coming storm not close enough to be heard over the sound of the falls that was almost more felt than heard.

"C'mon, isn't this feeling just amazing?"

The laughter in her voice was an expression of the sheer wonder of their surroundings, looking back at the others that she had convinced to join her on this recreational hike, feeling an odd echo from her words.

Figures, all of them. Vague forms that held the shape and posture of her companions, each of them a relative distance away that was both close enough to easily touch, but at the same time so very incomprehensibly far. Faceless, more concept than corporeal, she reached out— for? through? one of them as she fell into blue. Falling? There was a moment of panicworryfear that vanished like a popped bubble. She was racing the water down, her backwards fall turning into a headfirst dive, hitting the water with token resistance, the sounds of the jungle's waterfall disappearing like a shed garment, leaving only the steady rumble of the flume.

Exhale.

Pressed in blue, wrapped in weight and resistance and silence, she floated. Swimming meant air, so where was the surface? Where were the bubbles? She would need to breathe soon, which way was up? There were shapes in the water; there had to be a direction; was she going to get ea—

She found air with the opening of her eyes and a belated realization, the dreams of Castrovel fading as all dreams do, muddled concepts drifting into muddled feelings, until the strongest remained, only to be gone in seconds. The ceiling of her cabin was bathed in the muted blue light and underwater sounds of the AtmoScene™ Suite, the idle vibrations of the ship in transit through The Drift riding that line between sound and feeling as it always did. Zamasea mustered just enough focus to flick the "off" switch of the 'Suite with a thought. Content, she closed her eyes to try to chase down the dream, shifting her position before losing the thread almost immediately to sleep.

Inhale.

I am going to talk to my other players and see what people think. I will get back to everyone soon.

Thanks for your submittions. Keep an eye on PMs

I'm sorry i couldn't add the backstory today due to rl.

I'm of a mind to switch the feats to take the psychic feats first, because they seem very funny.

Ahri could be described as a bold but also caring captain.
On one hand she will try to get the best out of her crew with the means at hand (possibly intimidate :O), on the other hand her psychic side gives her many insights to her crew and brings her close, so she will automatically care about them.
Captain is a job with responibility for her and it was always her intention to become a very famous captain. To many Lashunta, especially females, are in the music or entertainment industry or something similar in her eyes. Time for a change there!
While generaly good-natured, she's not above using tricks at hand or playing her psychic talents to her advantage.
As a Lashunta female she's also very convinced about her irresistibility, but really wants to back that up with capability and prowess.

At least the surname would be debatable for me as long as under 10 posts, since it has to sound very cool as a Captain.
