Sentinel Boons on Paladins

Rules Questions

So, I'd love to build a Sacred Servant Paladin of Sarenrae (healbot style, maybe Oradin). And Sarenrae has this awesome Sentinel boon that reads:

Channel Efficiency:
Channel Efficiency (Su): You are a talented healer, and have honed your ability so that you can preserve your resources while you provide aid to the wounded. You can channel positive energy by consuming a single use of your lay on hands ability instead of two uses. If you don’t have the lay on hands class feature (or if you have lay on hands but can’t use it to channel positive energy), you instead gain a +4 sacred bonus on Heal checks.

Now, there are two ways that I know of to get to this:

  • - Take Sentinel Levels. Which is incredibly subpar for a paladin, since it doesn't advance any of your class features. So at level 11 you can now channel energy 3d6 (unboosted) by using one use of Lay on Hands. Hooray.

  • - Take Diverse Obedience. No wait, you can't. Because you are Lawful Good. And Sarenrae is Neutral Good. And you need to be of the same alignment as your deity in order to be able to take the feat. You are literally a Paladin of this deity, a holy knight who embodies all of her virtues and, as a Sacred Servant, even get Domain Spells from her and can call her Herald for free at level 12 if you have the Augment Calling feat.

So what I'm asking myself is this: Can it really be intended that this boon, which is literally made for paladins, is accessible for this very class only if it severly cripples the very abilities that this boon makes slightly better? It just doesn't seem right to me. As a GM, would you houserule Diverse Obedience to work on Clerics and Paladins of the selected Deities, even if they are one alignment step away? (Not talking RAW here)

Bump.

You seem to be reading the rules correctly as far as I can tell.

For comparison, Extra Channel gives you two extra uses of Channel Energy per day. If an Evangelist could use this with Diverse Obedience, she would potentially get an extra...9? Channel Energies per day, near full power. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to interpret that the loss of Paladin levels to your lay on hands are assumed for this feature.

Yes, if you only have five Paladin levels that’s a very weak boon.

You can take Sarenrae's Diverse Obedience feat if you have the Gray Paladin archetype. Of course, you are weakening a lot of your other Paladin abilities if you do so.

one way it weakens is by replacing channel energy, so such a Paladin would be getting the +4 to heal version of the boon.

Huh. Somehow I missed that it replaced Channel Energy.

Nevermind. Carry on.

Its still not great but it would lose less levels, 3 level dip into Divine Champion Warpriest switches the feat to Sentinel boons.

There is also the Divine Paragon Cleric which gives you the choice for what boons you get and might only need a 1 level dip. If the rules require the Divine Paragon Cleric bonus to be based on domain, which I'm uncertain, you can be a Sacred Servant Paladin to advance the domain.

I also don't see anything stopping a 1 level dip in sentinel for access to those boons as all I see about it is " If you later take levels in sentinel or evangelist, you lose access to the exalted boons and gain access to the new boons appropriate to your class."
