Responsive Duelist Feat

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Alright, here goes another question regarding attacks. This feat allows for an individual to counter attack any time they are attacked by someone that they have designated as their opponent. This all seems pretty straight forward and I think that it applies to all attacks except for a counter attack made by the said individual. Under this situation, what happens if someone with this feat who happens to have spring attack, moves into melee range of their designated opponent, attacks, and then proceeds to move out of their melee range? I think in this situation that the designated opponent would get an Attack of Opportunity against the individual. Would the person moving out of melee range also at that point get their counter-attack just prior of moving out of melee range? That's the question that I have? This of course is assuming that the individual have initiative and is attacking first in the round before his designated opponent can act. Any and all viewpoints will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where's the feat from? I don't recognise it and a search doesn't find it on d20pfsrd or AoN.

If it comes from some obscure 3rd party thing would you mind quoting the exact text of the feat? I wouldn't care to give an opinion without it.

Sorry about that AVR, I was unaware that the feat was a not a normal feat as I have access to Hero Labs with preloaded books and modules. The feat comes from the Sword Coast Module/Campaign book. I couldn't find any other material on the feat either so I understand if a good answer or opinion can't be given. Sorry for the problems everyone. Thanks

As avr said, could you provide the actual text of the feat?

Bonus question, as "Sword Coast" sounds very WOTCish: is it an old school 3.5 feat ? Despite early claims of compatibility, pre-PF stuff should be examined closely, and weighed by the GM, as things are quite different. It can work fine or just break completely.

A quick Google check gives mention of feats with that name in two different 3rd party PF things, ten years apart, but neither are present on the srd.

Going by your first message, I'd tentatively say you could answer the AoO, but can't be certain without the exact wording.
Also : it seems really strong. Almost absurdly so. There's a reason Come and Get Me is so popular and even it is not that good, by far.
Usually for every riposte type ability, even back in 3.5, there's a significant cost. I don't see that here.
But again, without knowing what the feat says, can't really tell.

OK, here are the requirements and the exact wording of the feat in question.
Combat Feat
Requirements: Dex 13, Weapon finesse, Dodge, base attack +5
Feat wording: When fighting with a slashing light weapon or a rapier, any attack made by a single enemy that you have designated provokes an Attack of Opportunity from you. This special attack of opportunity is called a counter-attack. You may not counter-attack your opponents counter-attack. Any counter-attack uses up one of your attacks of opportunities for that round.
And there you have it. But I have to agree with you Nyerkh, the feat does sound over powered for what is required for the feat as a whole.

I found this. Does it look like the feat you're using?

Quote:

RESPONSIVE DUELIST (COMBAT)

You can respond to your chosen opponent’s attacks, answering
them steel for steel.
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Dodge, Weapon Finesse.
Benefit: When fighting with rapier, longsword or short sword,
any attack made by the enemy you have designated as the
target of your dodge feat provokes an attack of opportunity
from you. This special attack of opportunity is called a
counter-attack. You may not counter-attack your opponent’s
counter-attack. Any counter-attack uses one of your attacks of
opportunity for the round.
Special: A fighter may select Responsive Duelist as a fighter
bonus feat.

This does look like a D&D 3.X feat. Dodge doesn't require designating a target in PF, which someone overlooked when importing Responsive Duelist into PF.

Assuming so then someone with responsive duelist and spring attack could move, attack and move back without either side getting an AoO - the target of spring attack doesn't get an AoO from the attackers movement. If they chose not to use spring attack and just move in, somehow triggering an AoO from their target then they could apparently make a counter-attack.

Also; so, so overpowered, as Nyerkh said.

Edit: It looks like the people that adapted the feat in your product did so with a bit more thought than the version I found. It doesn't change the other parts of my opinion above though.

Avr, it is very close and I agree that it was most likely created from that. Thank you so much.
