Drake Companion vs any "normal" animal companion

Advice

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, although using a lot of advice from this place! I'm dm-ing (I was the only one with *some* experience so was appointed DM) RotR with my group of 6 players (Paladin, Barbarian, Ranger, Sorcerer, a "normal" druid and a draconic druid). The Draconic Druid is from Legacy of Dragons. All fine and well I guess... But... she found online a way to *fix* the drake companion. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder_RPG/comments/5ladgq/fixing_the_drake_c ompanion_archetypes/)

Honestly, I am not sure if this *fix* is a good or a bad thing for my group.
Firstly, with 6 players I'm reluctant to having all powerful animal companions, as it should be fun for ALL players. (Wouldn't be any fun if the Half-Giant Barbarian wouldn't be the great damage dealer anymore).
Secondly, the other druid has a cat (tiger) and it seems like there is gonna be a huge difference with the drake companion. I understand that a drake is way more special than a tiger, but I just hope it won't kill the fun for all the others.

Anyways, any tips/opinions/ideas are very much appreciated.
Maybe I'm just worrying too much haha...

The "fix" does amp the power up quite a bit. Maybe too much? But that's the kind of thing you can leave open to tweaking down the road. Just let the player know that you reserve the right to balance the drake back down to base, if it gets out of hand.

But my bigger concern would be that you do have such a large party already, that maybe pet classes should be discouraged in the first place. Otherwise, you're going to have some really long combat rounds.

The Exchange

A drake is a bit more "free willed" than a normal animal companion. Have some roleplay complications as it is technically a "Baby" drake, and an untrained baby sometimes does things the that it wants to, not the what the druid commands it to.

I've always found the concept of having a pet dragon just plain silly... dragons have us as pets, not we them.

I think when the drake upgrades, the Druid should become the drake's Cohort. Lol.

Have them battle egos like with sentient items.

The Druid tells the drake to charge into battle, but fails the Ego check...
So, the drake tells the Druid to charge into battle.

Go on. Get in there, buddy, you can do it.

I "fix" the drake by bypassing its refusal to wear magic items. Its easy to do. Get your character a magic tattoo that has the same abilities as a wondrous item and then cast the "Transfer Tattoo" (1st level spell) on the Drake the next time it is asleep. Tattoo easily hidden under the scales. It is none the wiser and, because it is a 'dragon', would brag of manifesting its new powers, showing how superior it is to the flesh bags around it.

Thank you all for the advice and tips, I can surely work with this. very helpful ^^

I double down on the Drake Companion getting the fix and having an Ego battle. Or just a 5% chance for the Drake decide to not do anything useful that turn. Force some roleplay for the fix and give the Druid ways to win the Ego battle.
