Vigilante alignment

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hey guys, so I was curious on how exactly alignment would have to work for a vigilante. So I'm currently making a Vigilante for the Hell's Rebel's Campaign. The idea is for the face/normal identity to be someone who is friendly with many of the people in house Thune and the Guards of the town, while the Vigilante side would be the one helping the rebels and doing all the fighting with them, with her eventually going into the shadow dancer prestige class to achieve full stabby assassin.

My main concern is that her Face form would be lawful evil (I took the ex-asmodian campaign trait and the idea is that her family has always been a pretty chummy with the leadership but she's decided to stray from that but hasn't actually told anyone) although she wouldn't ACTUALLY be lawful evil, and be more of a true neutral (Her vigilante alignment) and would be putting on the Lawful Evil as a guise to keep up her appearance. So my issue would be, would she actually HAVE to be a lawful evil in her acts (she would have no issue pretending to support the various things happening, and even doing some light evil things to keep up the ruse, but wouldn't actually be evil.) or could it just be flavored that everyone just believes she is Lawful Evil aligned? I know this idea is kind of backward, with the face (Normal) version of the character, being the more "fake" or "masked" version with the vigilante being the more "true" to her ideals version.

Sorry if this was a bit convoluted but just wanted to kind of see what everyone else thought and how this would actually play into the class.

I had a similar vigilante situation in my Hell's Rebels game, so I figured the daughter of a noble house could be LN just fine and the dashing son of the revolution can be NG.

I managed this by needing to "keep up appearances" and "follow protocol" whilst in social mode.

I was thinking about having her be more Lawful Neutral when out of her vigilante, but I figured that things that detect alignment, and if I suddenly stopped acting so evil in character, some of the nobles and such might catch on that something is up, which is why I'm trying to put up a more "evil" persona when in the social form, but again, I'm not sure how exactly it would work as I wouldn't be truly evil, and it would be more of a mask than anything else, my GM was also questioning this as well, as I'm not sure if the alignment of a vigilante would need to be 100% authentic (just as with most superheroes act different when out of costume, and put up a bit of an act, while usually when in costume, they're a bit more of their true selves).

I rather expect the LE Chelaxians will think LN Chelaxians are weak, not enemies. They just don't have the stomach to make the hard choices. Wouldn't that be a positive thing to have for your social identity?

Particularly since Kintargo is not Egorian (indeed the gazeteer lists the city itself as CG) I would assume that a significant portion of the Kintargo upper crust is not *evil* per se. I mean, that's why we're having the revolution here and not elsewhere. FWIW, the previous mayor of Kintargo (whose disappearance under suspicious circumstances precipitates much of the action of the AP) was Chaotic Good.

If you're LN you qualify to serve as a *cleric* of Asmodeus (in PF1 at least) so I don't think that is going to attract attention for "not fitting in" to traditional Chellish society.

I feel like you're both right, but the more I think about it the more I feel like maybe my character is going to be more lawful evil than I originally thought, as I want to build her as an assassin that is basically just trying to murder all the higher ups and nobles. I also discovered an eastern god (Yaezhing) which is basically perfect for my character as I took the ninja-like archetype for vigilante and have the goal of shadow dancer, and the god is also Lawful Evil. At the same time though, my character would never kill innocent people, so I'm really struggling if she would actually be evil or neutral, as she kind of seems to be somewhere in the middle.

Well Hell's Rebels IS the chaotic good favoring AP, so maybe ye would want to save your LE ninja assassin one for Hell's Vengeance instead?
