Happy everything everyone. I couldn't log 'cuz some crazy druid hit Paizo's area with a storm.
Anyway; Michael, I read in a Mexican group that PF2ed. was like DnD 5ed? Do you play DnD?
I do! And as many other games as I can fit into my schedule. Generally speaking, I tend to think that anyone who thinks PF2 is like 5E hasn't actually played both systems, but everyone's entitled to their opinion.
For me personally, the main strength of 5E is that it's so incredibly simple. Are you literate and capable of remembering 5 simple rules? You can play 5E. Its use of bounded accuracy means that you can tell grittier stories by allowing even weak and significantly under-leveled opponents to still pose a threat, and it's relatively rules-lite system means the GM has a lot of freedom to improvise without worrying about an off-the-cuff ruling conflicting with a codified rule.
To me, its weaknesses are that it struggles to tell the really big fantasy stories that I grew up with (Salvatore's The Thousand Orcs just ends with a dead drow in 5E, non-spellcasters in 5E are never really more than the side characters of stories like the Malazan: Book of the Fallen series, etc.), and it doesn't have the depth or crunch that I really want from a ttRPG. After about level 3 there aren't a lot of character-defining choices left to make (especially for non-casters) and there's a high chance that your elven fighter is going to look a lot like that other person's elven fighter.
PF2 is a really deep and crunchy game where you get customization options every level, and it can tell a more high fantasy story since proficiency scaling means that a character who was a boss at level 1 and nearly TPK'd your group becomes a minion at level 6 that a fighter can critically hit on an exceptionally low roll and possibly just insta-kill. It's also highly modular and uses a robust trait system, so it's challenge system is more accurate and balanced than either PF1 or 5E and once you know how to parse the traits, it's really intuitive to figure out how things interact. It's more crunchy and more complex than 5E, and about as crunchy but a bit less complex than PF1. I also really like that that modularity it has means it grows exponentially compared to PF1; the fact that most archetypes are universal and interact in interesting ways with different class chassis mean that the 42 archetypes from the APG were the equivalent of up to 672 archetypes in PF1 on the day they came out, and if you include the 4 classes we've playtested since then, those archetypes are now worth upwards of 840 PF1 archetypes.
Currently (and this can change from day to day), my favorite ttRPGs in order are:
Pathfinder Second Edition
Cypher System
Starfinder
Dungeons & Dragons 5E
Pathfinder 1

I don't know who needs to hear this, but SaGa Frontier remaster is coming to the Switch April 15th and then the remaster for Legend of Mana is dropping June 24th. I will likely be unavailable for about a week around each game's drop date, but if any of you all plan on picking those games up or were really into them when they were brand new like 22 years ago, let me know and we can squee about them.

By the way, which is your favorite Mana game? Did you also play a legally dumped rom of Seiken Densetsu 3, like I did, back in the day?
EDIT: oh, and they buffed Sagat in the last SF5 patch LOL

Legend of Mana is a strong play for favorite of the franchise, though it's probably not hurting from the fact that I've gotten to play the other contenders much more recently. The beautiful art, amazing stories, numerous fun subsystems, etc. provide a lot of the best elements of the other franchise classics. And yessir, I remember that ROM, lol. Secret has a big nostalgia factor and Trials has a good storyline, plus a few of the Gameboy/DS entries were surprisingly good, but it's hard to compete with Legend.
Good to know about Sagat, I'll have to check him out!

I was flipping through my Magic of Incarnum book and it got me thinking: what made you change all the flavor of the original system? How did you get from meldshaper to veilweaver? And how different is the Radiant from the Vedist?
I literally didn't have a choice in the matter, Magic of Incarnum is not OGL so the only thing I could take direct inspiration from was the mechanics, not any of the lore or flavor. Once I'd settled on the flavor (Andreas was hoping for something that nodded to the Akashic Library, I'd been rereading some books from my Middle-Eastern Studies class at the time, it all kind of lined up), the rest just spun out from there. Calling them veils matched the setting context we'd decided on, veilweaver sounded like a real natural continuation from there, and that's how we got to where Akashic Mysteries landed.
The radiant is.... Not actually *super* different from the vedist and the differences are mostly in the fey-themed and setting specific veil sets I added and a few other little tweaks to make it a better fit for the City of 7 Seraphs campaign.

I just wanted to say that your volume of Strength of Thousands is the single most-exciting adventure of 2e so far, as a huge fan of Distant Worlds. Did you come up with that part of the volume yourself, and if so, what made you want to dabble in the gonzo, cosmic stuff?
And if I can ask this; what kind of detail on Akiton do you go into? I’d love to run some other stuff set there, so I’m desperate for any on the people there!

So, as with most APs, the developer (in this case Ron Lundeen) decided what the flow of the adventure was and what the basic premise of each book was before authors were ever selected. That said, I did specifically request Book 5 once I'd been tapped as an author. I like weird stuff. Some of my earliest introductions to fantasy were games like Shining Force and Phantasy Star, so a splash of gonzo and a sprinkle of technology always feels right at home in my favorite games and adventures, so getting to go play in a pre-Starfinder Akiton had a lot of appeal for me.
It was also the adventure I felt most comfortable with. Ron was really focused on finding BIPOC authors for this AP and when he said he needed someone who could tackle one of these books, I asked for the one on Akiton. I felt like my voice would do better in the adventure with a taste of sci-fi and some of those Princess of Mars influences, while ensuring that other authors who had a stronger claim to shaping the Mwangi Expanse and its people than I do could be the ones to establish those characters and communities in the game world.
Did you watch the stream? I was grading like crazy the past few days so I forgot to watch this
I did not, unfortunately. I wasn't able to track down the stream in time.

I really adore your motivations there. Is it alright to ask what, broadly, is detailed by the backmatter?

Pretty notable. There's a lot of minor updates to the UI that collectively make for a much smoother and more intuitive experience while still keeping the feel and core mechanics of the original. It really is just a thorough remaster. It's the same game and engine, just refined and expanded. Some of the equipment name changes are a little odd, looks they did quite a bit of changing things open when they relocalized.

I suppose that since Dream Scarred Press kind of colapsed, a Ultimate Akashic Magic is impossible now. Is there anything left in the oven for Akashic fans? And there was this Spheres of Akasha comming and I was surprised not to see Sayre in the cover, so...

I been busy! This full-time design gig takes a lot of time and effort, and Paizo's freelance pays significantly better than most 3pps can afford to, so the balancing act just hasn't been swinging akashic's way lately.
There should be another release I contributed to coming down the pipe shortly, and then a bigger akashic-related announcement sometime after that, but COVID threw a wrench in the Lost Spheres pipeline, so I've spent most of the last year's freelance hours on Paizo projects. When these couple releases get announced and start moving forward again, we'll see how things go and where that leaves me re: how I spend my freelance hours.

From this Friday through Sunday I'll try and be a bit more active in this thread for anyone who might want to Ask Me Anything during PaizoCon! Wanna know what my favorite thing in Guns & Gears is? Or any other announced book? What my current major influences are? What shows I'm watching or games I'm playing?
From Friday through Sunday I'll try to answer every question that comes in (though maybe not with the answer you're hoping for, legal restrictions, company policies, etc. may apply.)

Working with Ron Lundeen and Luis Loza, we created an entire region of Arcadia where the technology level supports firearms and other "steampunk" level technology, as well some unique areas that use magic to simulate technology. This is the most comprehensive look at Arcadia we've ever done and it made sure we had a home for some of the mechanics in Guns & Gears that I'm most excited about! Bringing more of Arcadia to life is a big deal for me and I couldn't be happier about the work we all put in on it!

How was the con?
It was fun! It was great to see a bunch of people excited for what we've done and what we're doing. I also enjoyed getting to spoil a bunch of the exciting stuff that'll be releasing later this year! PF2's ability to support even more customization than PF1 while maintaining a stable framework is a really exciting thing to have as a designer and it's so cool to know that things like Secrets of Magic, Guns & Gears, and Book of the Dead are just kind of the tip of the iceberg for what we can unleash in the future.

What did you do for a living before being a full-time game designer? What was you worst job? (Mine was giving classes in a rich-students' private school, and I was going to help the low level students to catch-up... my first day, a student tried to bribe me to let them do as they pleased. I only lasted one month and they didn't even pay me as accorded)

So, in high school I worked for a couple sandwich shops before moving into selling Alaskan Native art, then I joined the Army. After getting out, I worked as a cellphone salesman, pizza cook, and retail clerk all at the same time for awhile until I went back to school. I kept my job at Costco for a bit while in college, then I worked at a lumber/paper mill for a year until the fluctuating schedule started negatively impacting my schoolwork, at which point I quit and got a job as a bank teller. From there I worked my way up through banker, business product support specialist, and into treasury management, at which point my bank was bought out and my job disappeared. For most of the next 5 years after that I worked full-time as a freelance game designer, occasionally taking part time jobs like working as a rep at the pawn shop when I wanted a little extra cash.
It's hard to say what the worst job was. They all have their ups and downs and generally I was fortunate to have mostly good managers even in not-great jobs (with a few exceptions that aren't really worth dwelling on anymore.)

I was directed to maybe ask someone who worked on Secrets of Magic, so perhaps you can answer this for me; was the Amalgam Eidolon cut completely? I noticed it wasn't listed during PaizoCon and assume the Construct might be what has replaced, what I believe, the customizable option the Amalagam Eidolon would have been. Seems like Balazar may need to rework Padrig a bit if so.

Mark would be a better one to ask on that front since he's the primary designer on the summoner for Secrets of Magic (and I've been pretty heads down on Guns & Gears and some other projects, so I'm not actually sure what all was revealed about the summoner at PaizoCon and don't want to accidentally spoil information that someone else might have a plan for.)

Darn, the hunt continues. Lol.
Maybe a Guns & Gears question then? I really enjoy the idea of adding role playing notes to certain options, such as the examples given in Secrets of Magic with the Prepared Casters being known in-world as say Feycaller instead of Druid if they are a Flexible Casters. Will this be something done moving forward and, more in relation to G&G, will the Gunslinger have something similar for those utilizing Crossbows instead of Guns?

Guns & Gears does talk about the lore and development of firearms more, and how e.g. an artillerist with a cannon in Alkenstar will have a counterpart in Taldor who leads a ballista team instead. We didn't quite get to giving the crossbow using slingers a different name in canon though, but there is a reason for that. Slingers all have their way, so a given slinger is more likely to be referred to as a drifter, pistolero, sniper, spellshot, or vanguard. With the exception of pistolero those are all pretty weapon-neutral and a sniper's a sniper regardless of the weapon they're using to snipe.
So there will be plenty of roleplaying hooks and notes for the various options in the game, but probably not that specific example of an alternate name for crossbow-wielding slingers (though I'm doing final approvals right now, so...)

Makes sense actually. Well, on the off chance that something like an alternate name does make it in, allow me to push my agenda a bit and perhaps suggest Arbalist. :D

What are your religious beliefs? Do you hope for an afterlife?
I grew up in a super strict Christian environment (elementary school at the same church we attended on Sunday, tie and dress clothes three days a week, spankings with a wooden paddle from the principal, all the stuff that makes people get a little pale and uncomfortable when I mention it in conversation...), but that wasn't like, the only element of spirituality I was learning. I also learned a lot about Tlingit spiritual and cultural beliefs from my grandpa and uncles.
The main things I took away from all that was that any God I personally believe in is one who endorses love and is saddened by hate. I think that people who try to use their "Christian faith" as an excuse to persecute others aren't really Christian; the word means "follower of Christ" and everything I've read about the dude says he accepted everyone for who they are and specifically discouraged those kinds of actions.
I'm not super into organized religion anymore (and when I was it wasn't exactly what you might call voluntary) but I don't have hard feelings towards people who are, since I've seen it do a lot of good in small communities where churches are primary support networks. I do believe in spiritual elements to existence that we don't understand scientifically yet, and I like to think that this is just one stop in a much larger journey.

What are your thoughts on Metroid Dread and the Advance Wars? (My knowledge of the latter is lacking).
My wife, Morgan, is more of a Metroid fan than I am, so I don't have much of an opinion on Dread. She's interested but what she really wants is a new Metroid Prime entry or a similar spiritual successor that uses the first-person interface.
Advance Wars I'm looking forward to. I'm a sucker for grid-based strategy games, and Re-Boot Camp looks like it's keeping all the fundamentals while layering on a nice dose of graphical updates and engaging cinematics, so I'll for sure be picking it up come December (and will probably just preorder it so the download hits my Switch a few days before and gets me pumped up for it all over again.)

I freakin' love Advance Wars, despite being terrible at it.
The reality of the matter is, while skill can increase enjoyment by allowing you to access deeper nuances of a game, it's fundamentally not required for enjoyment. I love Guilty Gears games and while I'm generally pretty good at Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and most of the Dragon Ball fighters (or similar games), I never got the hang of Guilty Gears, so I just play it like a button masher and hope for the best. Still love it.
