Side Job from Calistra's high cleric

Advice

So a player of mine has found himself owing a favor to Calistra's high cleric. She is the crime lord of a metropolis who has managed to eliminate every major enemy. He is a very capable warrior occultist that can probably complete any type of task. Problem is I have no idea what she could want from him. As he is a significant person she wouldn't waste his talents on something trivial

Most sessions after ending an arc start with a couple of hours of misc downtime nonsense before diving back into the main plot. I need something that I can weave in and out of while rotating between the different players. Anything that would require violence would probably get the other players involved or be trivial enough to just skip over. I would like a moral quandary of some sort but he's playing an Asmodean

Ideas- debt collecting, stealth mission, make an exchange

How about this. Look ahead a bit and find some sort of monster that would be 'interesting' without being a boss type monster. Something known to be in a region the party will be heading towards. have the cleric ask for one of those creatures to be delivered to her, alive and in relatively good condition.

That should be difficult enough. Probably the hardest part is going to be convincing the rest of the party to not kill them all.

What does she want to do with it? Dunno. Make it a pet. Make it a bodyguard. Gift it to a client. Set it loose in the sewers. It 'escapes' from an important official's house.

A young dragon makes the perfect gift.

An exchange? And you want a moral quandry? How about...

A prisoner exchange. She has someone that someone else wants, and they have someone she wants. The thing is, she doesn't want to actually give her prisoner to that person. She the PC do the exchange, then kill the other team's prisoner and/or the other team entirely.

Basically, you make this a Law vs. Chaos problem. She's chaotic and has no problems with breaking her deal. He, however, believes in upholding deals, doesn't he?

For bonus points, give him a way to "technically" do what she wants without actually doing what she wants, as befits an Asmodean, but make sure he has to deduce the solution on his own rather than spelling it out for him.

Also, make the enemy fairly easy for him to kill, so it doesn't entice other players to join. After all, he's a skilled warrior. The real trick is getting the prisoner out alive.

Liberty's Edge

For a cleric of Calistria, it should be something with either a vengeance or lust/desire link.

Go be a distraction you clever boy.
Have you considered a career in being a fall-guy?

Face it, the Callistrian High Priestess is likely to have all the needed skills available in house, so your hero is an expendable resource. His main value is as a cut-out, keeping heat off of her. Whatever the job is likely to be, it is going to have blow-back that she wants directed away from her.

We're tricky that way.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It should probably be a sting operation.

Perhaps he can facilitate a purchase of an expensive artifact. As an occultist he should be good at authenticating things, and he might be there to learn as much about the artifact as possible.

I don't think it is really possible to become more powerful AND eliminate every major enemy. As you eliminate enemies and grow in power, you naturally attract more, particularly if you are also a crime lord.

One interesting enemy, and one that she particularly might want an 'outsider' to handle would be competition from with in the Church of Calistria itself. Someone wanting to assert authority over her is a possibility. Another would be a rival whose territory brushes against hers. A last possibility is a junior that she wants to eliminate before a threat fully materializes, but can't be seen as doing it or it would wreck moral in her organization.

Of course hitting more than one bird with one stone is always nice, and since Asmodeans in general are on the opposite side from Calistirians, and particularly from thieves guilds, using the PC to tarnish the reputation of another group or drag them into a fight with her opponents could be an secondary goal.

Something like: PC kills rival Capo. Rival guild discovers (is fed?) Asmodean link. Rival guild gets revenge on Hellknight. Hellknights go to war with Rival Guild. Our Cleric celebrates, weakening law enforcement and a rival at the same time, for little cost. Of course now both the Hellknights and the Rival guild might be after the PC....
