Interest Check - Spells and Steel

Recruitment

Hello again Paizo. Hopefully the site stays up long enough for people to actually see and respond to this. I have a couple of other campaign concepts that I've been looking at running and I'd like to get them out there and see what people are interested in.

Iron Kingdoms
Iron Kingdoms is a steampunk fantasy setting and system developed by Privateer Press. They call it the game of Heavy Metal Fantasy and, in my opinion, it lives up to its reputation. It's set in a world where magic and science have both exploded with new discoveries, ushering in a massive industrial age where magi-technology allows the titular Iron Kingdoms to thrive and war with each other. Meanwhile, powerful ancient magics and immortal gods linger at the edge of civilization, bringing both blessings and destruction.

IK uses a 2d6 based system, but it's very similar to d20 and should be fairly quick to learn for those familiar with d20, but not with the system. It also does a lot of interesting things with gods, magic, and technology that I find very fascinating and has a lot of really deep lore to help inspire characters and stories.

Mage Wars
A homebrew setting that I've been refining for a while now (name subject to change). Set in an alternate timeline where Nazi Germany discovered dark magic, Soviet Russia developed super tech to counter them, and the world fell apart, it's a world of modern heroes living in a time of danger and adventure. Powerful magic has come back to the world for the first time in thousands of years and the world has changed into something just familiar enough to be recognizable, while being very different, and very deadly for those who try to make deals and harness magic without proper precautions.

I would be running this setting with the Savage Worlds system, using a number of homebrew rules to customize and flavor the magic and supernatural elements of a world where World War II never entirely ended. I took inspiration from things like Wolfenstein and the like to help develop the concept, so it's meant to be pulpy and action packed.

After a long absence in these boards, I'm slowly coming back and I'd be interested in the Iron Kingdoms game. Do you have any idea of what kind of game are you looking for?

As far as I've read, you could run an all out war game, a nature versus civilization game, a spying game.

I'm not 100% set in a style, but my current thought was to set the game in a region called the Thornwood. It's a wild region on the border between the two biggest kingdoms where the vast majority of the factions in the game all have interests and have been fighting back and forth. My thought was that players would be mercenaries and soldiers working for one of the factions to deal with treats, explore the region, and defeat the mysteries and monsters of the Thornwood. Sort of a mix of exploration, military, and classic adventuring.

Heya. I've gotten to play a little of the Iron Kingdoms rpg, and I'd be interested in a pbp of it.

I'm definitely interested.

Liberty's Edge

I'd throw my hat in the ring for the Mage Wars one. I love modern fantasy, especially if WWII-themed. Do you know of an Italian RPG called Sine Requie? The premise is somewhat similar.

IK as in playing Warcasters?

Having a Warjack or two would be super awesome.

I think I have the IK rules stashed somewhere, that sounds quite fun.

I vote working for anyone but Menoth

@Sapiens: I hadn't heard of it before, but looking at it, I see where you're getting the resemblance.

@psionichamster: Warcaster is one among many careers available to players. As is owning Jacks, though getting a full-on warjack is tough right away. An armed up laborjack is easy though.

I'm willing to explain or discussing setting stuff for either idea if people have questions by the way.

A big question is whether there are any character ideas that you know you don't want to see, say for plot reasons.

For IK, I'd say that characters aligned with Cryx or Everblight would be bad ideas, mainly because of how warped and inherently subservient to a god-like evil being they are. A skorne character would also require them to be an outcast with a good history to justify them allying with a human kingdom (probably Cygnar).

For MW, a diehard loyalist to one of the more fascist/cruel nations would probably be a bad idea. Actual Nazis, hardcore Soviets, that sort of thing. Of course, playing a character who's from one of those nations, but hasn't bought the propaganda is fine. Like a German who doesn't follow the Nazi party line is still perfectly acceptable, as most of the really awful Nazis are the military command and special forces.

Understood.

For reference:

Big list of IK rpg careers

I'm leaning towards a Nyss mercenary who is still coming to terms with his people's devastation by the actions of the dragon Everblight.

I should also note that I would be interested in allowing the Unleashed line as well, which includes a lot more stuff, including most of the wilderness and tribal based careers and races.

I've only ever looked at the core rulebook. Are there many books in unleashed?

Right now, three, just like the core: Unleashed, Wild Adventure, and Skorne Empire. They're basically three expansion books to add the stuff from Hordes into the TRPG, but for some reason they decided that putting the core rules in again in the main Unleashed book was necessary. I guess so people who were only interested in the Hordes stuff didn't need to grab the core book again.

Unleashed adds 5 races and 29 careers, plus another god for Priests and a new magic variant.
Wild Adventure adds 3 races and 13 careers or variant careers.
Skorne Empire adds 1 race and 15 careers, though they're all meant for Skorne characters.

And to anyone who thinks that looks overwhelming, I should explain that Iron Kingdom careers are much, much simpler than classes in a game like PF, and you start with two, so you're character has a lot of variety from the get go.

Right so. To give you an idea of what I'm looking out for, I was thinking Cutthroat and Ranger from the core book. For a particularly deadly mountain woodsman.

That sounds fine.

I should note that I'm mostly looking for interest in either game right now. If people want to ask question, discuss setting or characters, feel free, but no one needs to actually start building yet.

Definitely interested in the IK game.

Reading up on the rules now, its been quite a while since my WARMACHINE days.

Thinking of playing a Cyadoran, possibly a Journeyman Warcaster who's been sent to season herself with merc work, or a Khadoran inventor who's determined to find out how to power a 'jack without massive coal reserves (a la Nemo).

Sounds interesting is there a pdf or srd?

I have pdfs. I'm slightly disappointed in the online resources available though. Even the wiki is kind of sparse.

I may put together a player's guide to fill in some blanks if people are interested in a quick reference for lore.

I only had a small chance to play Iron Kingdoms but the bit I did was amazing. I'll have to get my hands on the books again but I would be very much down for it.

Here is the recruitment for Iron Kingdoms.
