Monster Slayer build - Colour out of Space

Advice

Colour out of Space

I need a reliable way to defeat this creature. bonus points if it meshes with the idea ive already got running.

The character im making is level 7 and has 40k gold

My currenty idea is to use a cleric (for no particular reason other than good saves and the necessary spells i want) that uses a gun (to hit touch Ac against most creatures)

I want dimensional anchor, spell immunity, align weapon, and fly on my spelllist if possible.

A Colour out of Space's touch AC is the same as its normal AC, 23. A gun is therefore not the best tool to deal with it. On the other hand you want as high a touch AC of your own as you can manage to avoid its disintegrating touch, armor is not going to help. Decent Fort and Will saves, and not dumping Con/Cha are going to matter vs. it too. You will need either a ranged attack, spells or a good standard action melee attack to deal with it spring attacking you. It's vulnerable to force effects.

A shaman with the spiritual guardian feat can use spiritual weapon effectively on a Colour out of Space. You will also want a further bonus against spell resistance - either the spell penetration feat or piercing spell by feat or by rod - to help ensure its SR 21 doesn't save it. Reach spell might also be useful (again, by rod or feat). The ancestors spirit is best suited to this I think. You can pick up the arcane enlightenment hex via wandering hex to get the fly spell and the others are either on your list or the cleric list, which you can gain access to via a human or half-human favored class bonus. A one level dip in monk (w/magical knack trait) could help your saves and touch AC if you're concerned there. Alternately snake style could help your touch AC vs. one attack per round which is all that the Colour gets.

any idea for preventing it from running away? to track it or ensure youre able to administer the killing blow?

Spiritual weapon will follow it and keep hammering away. Failing that the locate creature spell via arcane enlightenment might be an option, or you could just get a high survival skill to track it, or you could invest in magic or alchemical items to help find it.

Dark Archive

If your GM allows third party material you might want to look into Spheres of Power. (I keep saying this a lot.)

Destruction Sphere so you can use destructive blasts.
Force Blast so you can do [Force] damage.
Extended Range twice so you can attack from 680 ft. distance.
Greater Blast twice so your blasts do 7d10 damage.

The downside is that you have to make ranged touch attacks, and you'll also have to get through it's spell resistance. You'll also have to spend a lot of spell points on your blasts if you want to take the CooS down quickly.
The Thaumaturge class might be a good choice. You'll have a BAB of 5, which helps a little. You've got just enough talents if you take a sphere specific drawback. You can raise your casterlevel by 3, although that's risky. It does help with the damage and spell resistance, and if you go for a Gnome you can decrease the risk of backlash by one percent. A Gnome's size also helps with your ranged touch attacks. A Staff of Destruction +2 raises your caster level to 12 for 12d10x1.5 damage. Focus on Dexterity for your to hit chance and Charisma for your Spell Points.
You've got 5 feats, Spell Penetration and the greater version are good.

Ofcourse, if your GM doesn't allow Spheres of Power you'll have to think of something else.

I guess the moral of the story is that you can optimize for anything as long as you're willing to make a character that's useless in every other situation.

Pitborn Tiefling Paladin 3 / Id (Blood)Rager 4:

20 point buy.
Str 18, Dex 8, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 8, Cha 15+1
(Str 20 and Cha 18 with items)

Pass for Human alternate racial trait.

Two undecided traits.

Relevant Class Features:
Divine Grace, Lay on Hands, Fatigued Mercy
Atavistic Avatar (Dedication), Bloodrage, Spells

Feats (two of them retrained):
Extra Rage
Vital Strike (R)
Furious Finish (R)
Improved Iron Will

Iron Will (Bonus while Raging)
Greater Fortitude or Lightning Reflexes (Bonus)
Skill Focus (Diplomacy or Sense Motive) (Bonus)

Saves (Cloak of Resistance +2, Headband of Charisma +2, Raging)
Fort: 17
Ref: 7
Will: 13

Magic Items:
Belt of Strength +2
Headband of Charisma +2
Cracked Opalescent White Pyramid Ioun Stone + Wayfinder (Proficiency with the Butchering Axe)
+1, Furious Butchering Axe (for normal use)
Cloak of Resistance +2
Mithral Breastplate
Specialized Healer's Satchel (to deal with Ability Drain after the fight)

Consumables:
Scroll of Fly (60 fly speed, but you can't take the run action)
Scroll of Instant Weapon

Retraining:
700 gp assuming you retrained at level 7, not level 6.

9210 gp left

Beyond level 7:
At later levels, if you continue with Bloodrager then retrain Extra Rage into Planar Heritage (Sylph) and take Airy Step->Wings of Air for a natural fly speed.
Also, the Id Rager archetype is perfect since we want a size increase on the Instant Weapon conjuration. But otherwise I'd favor the Arcane Bloodline of the vanilla bloodrager, while buying an Impact weapon.

****

Cast Enlarge Person on yourself and create a MWK Butchering Axe with a scroll of Instant Weapon (4 and 3 minute duration, so pre-buffing is very possible). Either from an actual attack or the aura, the Colour Out of Space will have attacked you and you'll gain +2 attack and one effective size increase on attacks against it.
This places your Vital Strike Damage at 12d6+12, or 84 with Furious Finish.
Which is exactly 126 damage since you're attacking with a force effect.

+17 to hit gives you a 75% chance to kill it each round.

Buffs:
Enlarge Person
Longarm (to avoid an AoO)
Scroll of Fly
Scroll of Instant Weapon

Even though your fly speed is higher, the Colour can run while flying. Which means it can run away like a coward, unfortunately.

But if you want to play a cleric, then here's what you can do with Snake Style (as avr suggested).
I'd say this is the minimum amount of resources spent for maximum effect.

Items:

Cracked Deep Red Sphere Ioun Stone x4 + Wayfinder (1,300 gp, 1,000 gp if you sell the other three Ioun Stones)
Cracked Ioun Stones have a 25% chance to resonate with a Wayfinder, so it would take 4 of them on average to grant you Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat.

Either a custom wondrous item granting +5 competence to Sense Motive for 2,500 gp. Or the Inquisitor's Monocle for 6,800 gp.

Wand Key Ring (+10 to UMD checks regarding Focused Scrutiny, 3000 gp)

Scroll of Focused Scrutiny x 2 (400 gp)

****

You'll buy IUS for 1,300 gp, then spend one feat on Snake Style, and pump up your Sense Motive.

Sense Motive: 29+Wis
7 (Ranks) +3 (Class) +2 (Snake Style) +10 (Focused Scrutiny) +2 (Tears to Wine) +5 (Competence bonus from item) +X (Wis)

UMD: 15+Cha, target DC 24
1 (Ranks) +3 (Karmic Blessing) +10 (Wand Key Ring) +1 (Guidance) +X (Cha)

Spells Prepared:
Guidance (lv0)
Karmic Blessing (lv1)
Tears to Wine (lv2)

*******

If we assume a Wisdom of at least 20, then you'll have a (buffed) Sense Motive modifier of 34. Which means the Colour can only hit you with a Nat 20.

Since its Feed ability is once/day, the only offensive ability left is its attack. Which has a 5% chance of actually hitting you.
