Switching out the UC summoners "summon monster" SLA

Advice

I'm looking into a build where a little girl has a guardian angel/ big brother/.... Protecting her.

To me UC summoner seems like the natural choice. Big caveat though, I just played a summoning wizard for a whole AP so I won't want the "summon monster" SLA.

What would be a reasonable exchange for this ability? I'd be looking at bonus feats or other ideas.

On the other hand you can't use the SLA while the eidolon is there.

So not using this might nit be worth anything...

What's your take?

Check out the spirit summoner archetype. It trades away the summon SLA and a couple higher level abilities for shaman spirit powers and hexes.

I would not say that not planning on using the SLA makes it worth nothing. The fact is it remains a tool in your belt as long as it is there. If your Eidolon dies, you may end up using it. Or you may use it when you find that some summonable monster has the exact ability you need to survive.

Perhaps your GM would allow "summon monster" to be replaced with "summon eidolon" in the SLA, so that you can bring your buddy back after "death".

I think that would be a bit to powerful, it would make it next to impossible to get rid of the eidolon with out just focus firing on the summoner. Given that unchained gives up quite a bit of evolution points I think an extra evolution point at the levels you would have gained summon monster sla's and a few other convenience buffs for the eidolon like allowing it to heal naturally(both hp and ability damage) as well as a few extra hit points per level to help make it last a little bit longer but not make it impossible to deal with as an instant bring you back after death ability.

I like this. It's a "chained" archetype though. Could it still be used with the unchained summoner?

I don't see why this won't work with UC summoner, nothing in the archetype alters eidolon stats, the other class abilities are the same between the 2 versions.

It will require a discusion with your GM as to what spirit choices are compatible with which eidolon subtypes.

Great, like it. And it's even in the rules :-)

Any other options?

Counter summoner? In this case you are trading the summon SLA for the ability to immediate action counter spell conjurations. Maybe your 'gaurdian angel' empowers you to protect the boundries between the worlds?

If you're looking for house rules, I'd try to replace the SLA with another SLA. And the SLA should probably be conjuration-based to fit the theme. So, maybe an Instant Weapon SLA that's always effected by Greater Magic Weapon, for level scaling, and only available if your Eidolon isn't summoned.

Dark Archive

If your GM allows third party material you might want to look into Spheres of Power. Specifically the Conjuration Sphere. This also means you don't need to be a Summoner. I'd suggest the Incanter class just to get you started.
