No General feat at level 1?

Pretty basic question, but just to be sure...

Despite a lot of general feats being labelled "level 1," characters do not by default get a general feat until level 3? You would have to, for example, be a human and take the ancestry feat that gives you a general feat to actually get a general feat at level 1?

That is my understanding.

Thanks. Seems a bit odd that you can't get the feat representing being adopted until level 3.

That's been bugging me too and with healing being in fairly short supply in some groups, it'd be useful to be able to take a couple of those skill feats at level one to make up for it.

Yet, that would make that feat a "must have" and I tend to frown on that as well, but we get enough options that it wouldn't be horrible.

Honestly this is pretty horrible..
it really ups the premium on being a Human.
and really wrecks the idea of half elves/half orcs who compete with them.

also i cuts off things that should be background concepts.. quick repair, shield/weapon/armour profiency feats..

I do feel like lv 1 should get a general and ancestrial at one.

The feat level also limits which general feat you can take via the ancestry feat, as I seem to recall that it only grants access to 1st level general feats.

You are all correct.

The lack of an across the board 1st level free General Feat, is killing a lot of interesting options and making them fit some bizarre design choice for options that kill character design freedom and options.

I talked this over with my gaming group and we came to the consensus that the creation process feels like it's missing a feat during creation.

Ideally we figured, ABC+Free.

So at 1st level you'd get Ancestry Feat, Background Feat, Class Feat, and a Free Feat.

This would resolve a lot of early character creation moments that just seem strange to suddenly get at later levels when they should of been built into the character from level 1.

I can see obvious benefits to granting a General Feat at 1st level. It allows many more concepts to be viable at 1st level; especially so because a general feat can be converted into a second ancestry or skill feat, or used to expand starting proficiencies.

It would seem reasonable to put Adopted Ancestry in the Ancestry feat lists, especially since it represents an accident of the womb lottery or cultural exposure like a good portion of the Ancestry feats rather the result of conscious training like most of the General Feats.

Putting Adopted in the Ancestry list makes a lot of sense. However it also compares poorly with the Half-It Heritage feats, not all of which will be limited to exclusive to Humans.

If they are going to give a general feat at first level, then the feat list needs to be cleaned up SIGNIFICANTLY. I found myself thankful my players didn't have to wade through that feat chapter to make a 1st level character. It really feels like the only part of the book that has this problem but man is it a problem.

Barring a big overhaul to make the feats chapter more user friendly, I'd vote against giving a general test at 1st level. By contrast I'm all for getting another ancestry feat at 1st level.

I'm on board with a free feat at level 1 (general or otherwise). Will probably houserule it after Playtest if Paizo doesn't agree.

If the feats chapter needs to be more user-friendly that is a separate issue. I admit I haven't looked at it closely since no one in my group has had to use it yet.

I had a similar problem trying to wade through the spells looking for my clerical domain powers. It is truely painful in both PDF and physicalcopy.
