Additional Lore doesn't let me become Legendary

If my character takes Additional Lore, I get free skill increases at 3rd, 5th, and 13th that can only apply to Lore. That runs just short of being able to improve the skill to Master at 7th and Legendary at 15th. Is that intentional? I ask because I believe it runs counter to the text at the bottom of the feat:

Special You can select this feat more than once, choosing a new subcategory of Lore each time and gaining the listed skill increases to that Lore.

Emphasis mine. I believe the intent might be similar to the Gnome Obsessive feat, but at some point the numbers were tinkered with.

taking the feat makes you trained. So only 3 increases are required in order to put you at legendary.

What I'm curious is do the increases you get have to go toward the skill you chose via Additional lore?

The way it's worded, it sounds like you could pick a different lore skill to advance in at 3rd, 5th and 13th level. Then again, the special section about taking it multiple times seems to suggest you can't.

If I can't apply those lore increases to different lore skills then what happens if that lore skill has been advanced outside of the feat?

If I'm already Legendary in the skill by the time I hit 5th level then what happens to the other two skill increases the feat gives me at 5th and 13th?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

AFAIK there are no rules saying you can't be Master before 7th and/or Legendary before 15th. There are rules saying you can't use your class-granted skill boosts to exceed those limits, but I see no reason they would apply to the boosts from Additional Lore. So, I think you get to be Master at 5th and Legendary at 13th.

Admittedly if this is the case there should be a note saying "this is despite the rules for most skill boosts." And it may be that it's all a mistake dating to a rough draft where 5th & 13th were the normal levels for master & legendary, in which case Additional Lore should probably change to imitate Obsessive.

well, This is what I'm seeing is possible. But I admit I may be missing something.

I take the feat additional lore at 2nd level becoming trained in the lore skill of my choice. Then at 3rd level, I use my class skill increase to go from trained to expert in the lore skill I picked up with the feat. Also at 3rd level I'm able to go from expert to master thanks to the increase granted by the additional lore feat.

This means when I hit 5th level I now go from master to legendary thanks to the increase provided by the feat.

At 13th, I get a skill increase which I can only use on a skill that is already legendary. Unless I'm allowed to use that skill increase on a different skill.

I'm fully aware this is likely an unintended exploit, which is why I'm pointing it out.

It only says that the increase has to be in a Lore skill, NOT that it has to be into the Lore skill you picked up with the feat.

So, using your example, at level 13 you could place that increase in ANY lore skill you have as long as it doesn't exceed other limitations. (Master for a non-Signature skill as an example)

I agree, but when you look at the section marked special things get kind of murky.

This seems to state that the increases apply to the lore skill you picked when you chose the feat. It seems odd that when I take the feat a second time my options suddenly become more limited.

IMO either, you should be able to apply the boost to a different lore skill if you want, as this makes the feat more interesting and more versatile. If the intention however is that you should only be allowed to get the increases to the lore skill in question then they need to change the wording and just state

at 3rd level you become an expert, at 5th level you become a master and at 13th level you become legendary in the lore subcategory selected.

In it's present state there is this weird half and half situation.
