Determining stats for monsters as PCs

ok, so I was considering running a game where the players choose a "monster" from the bestiaries to play as. I would probably restrict them to cr5 creatures or lower. Though when playing this way would the characters stats just be what the bestiary entry says? How could you add some variety if the players chose the same creature?

The normal point buy or ruling for stats doesn't really make sense for a number of monsters.should I try to reverse engineer a race using the race builder rules from the advanced race guide? how would I go about that?

The premise I was considering is that the players are some shmucks that find an artifact that transforms them into the creatures then shatters with the pieces going in different directions.

Given that scenario I was considering having them roll stats normally and increase/ decrease the stats listed in the bestiary entry by the difference in the ability modifiers.

Another thing I was considering was giving a penalty or a bonus to the abilities scores based on the initial stats that goes away over time as the players get acclimated to their new bodies. potentially adding fear as someone slowly loses there intelligence. Though i'm not fond of this idea for the justification of possibly losing physical ability scores over time.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Err... not an easy matter x)

It's hard to say if it will be overpowered or not. I haven't find anything it the rulebooks about that. However, in the shae game my band just started, we've tried to go with point buy, and add [difference between point buy and 10] to the base ability from the bestiary.

So if someone got 18 Wis in point buy, that's a +8 to the base shae's 13 Wisdom, total 21, and if someone got 7 Wis in point buy, that's a -3 to the base shae's 13 Wisdom, total 10.

It hasn't seemed to backfire yet. Sure, the stats might rapidly get lots higher than those of normal PCs, but that's why one calculates LA / CR.

Monsters for pc's weather it be roll or point buy you take any odd ability scores in the entry and subtract 11, if its even you subtract 10 and those are the racial modifiers then add those to what ever stats they rolled/purchased in addition monsters with pc class levels get the following additional stat adjustments in any order +4, +4, +2, +2, +0, and –2. Your pcs will definitely have fewer class levels then the average party but may gain some other handy tools.

Really isnt an easy matter in 1st edition im afraid haha but blatantly ignore anyone saying "overpowered" ...its 1st edition the PC's are already VERY OP as is it reallllly doesnt matter do what you want my guy, its 100% the silliest response to anything in DnD 3e or PF 1st.
