Cleric spheres or prayer books

2nd Edition could be a GREAT moment to deal with the divine characters' ability to cast EVERY spell in their list. Not every god would grant every spell, after all.
I know it probably would be too much work to divide all divine spells into spheres again as they were in AD&D. But we have schools and, maybe better, descriptors. We could rule that a deity only grants spells with some descriptors, or bans spells of a certain school/subschool.

Seconded.

I have a wish list fior clerics which starts with:

- Deific obedience as a base class ability
- Spell list restricted by deity's portfolio in some way
- Return of the 3.5 Cloistered cleric (less combat ability for more knowledges and spellcasting.
- Domains changing the character's class skills

Anything that encourages a cleric of Sarenrae to be completely unlike a cleric of Lamashtu in the way they play is a winner in my book.

I'd absolutely love this. Say that a cleric can only choose spells associated with their god's Domains, and then make sure that each Domain has more than 1 spell per spell level associated with it.

I don't think we'll see it though, as much as I hope for it. The main reason is that it quickly becomes a LOT for designers to keep track of on the back end. They have to make sure all the Domains are relatively balanced against each other in terms of which and how much spells they have access to. And it would probably go off the rails quickly in supplements released after the game was published, with some domains getting a lot more love than others.

Ah well...

I proposed the idea of Clerics having a "prayer book" during the original PF playtest and Jason poo-pooed it. I'd like to see it considered again.

Clerics with a prayer book and arcanist-style casting would be aok in my book.

I'd love to see this. The biggest issue with Clerics (divine casters period, really) is that they just don't have any real faith identity within the class.
A devoted follower of the god of Thieves and Shadows has, essentially, the same spell layout as a devoted follower of the god of Law and Light.
How is that okay?

It can't be a balance issue either: Arcane spell schools have been wildly out of balance with each other for decades with no fix in sight. (Prove me wrong, Jason! ;P )
